San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Crisp citrus and pine hops balanced perfectly with not overly sweet malt. Possibly my new favorite IPA. Damn fine beer.

Pours orangish amber with white head. Strong citrus and pine hops. Taste is hoppy with caramel and tofee notes. Excellent malt presense that is not to overwhelming.

P: Pours a clear (tiny specks) apricot body with a off white milky head that leaves behind wet sloppy lacing. S: Aroma delivers lush peaches and apricots are leading the way of the tropical parade. Lemon tartness and faint pine resin contribute to the sweet fruit. T/M: Super sweet tropical fruits up front then the bitter lemon, grapefruit and orange oil take over the dry finish. Toasted toffee malt and pepper. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. O: Lush tropical fruits delicate spice and toasted malt. The bitterness in the finish really rounds out the sweetness. Fantastic easy drinking IPA to seek out.

Bottle. This particular one was almost months old and I believe the rating was affected adversely. Pour golden orange with off white head. Smell is bright citrus and caramel maltiness. Taste is orange/grapefruit and more caramel maltiness than I would prefer. Even for a 3 month old bottle. Will rate this but seek out a fresh bottle as this was not memorable.

22oz bomber. Pours a bright gold/orange color with a frothy white head. Aroma has a strong hop presence of citrus, pine, and tropical fruits. Taste has lots of citrus, and pine. Slightly resinous up front, and lots of grapefruit bitterness follows in the finish.

NYC Trip Beer #8. Nothing like following your very first AleSmith IPA with your first Sculpin. Between the two, I far preferred the Sculpin. Pours a pale orange with a lovely white head head. Beautiful Citrus scents and flavor. Well carbonated with a crisp hop finish. Bought some to bring back to the A. Bottle - Guilty Goose - New York, NY

A new top five ipa for me. Orange, lemon, grapefruit, and something like toasted peach jelly. Wonderfully flavorful bite, light body but perfect amount of alchohol gives the flavor depth. Yes sir.

Pours orange with tall white head. All sorts of citrus and melon wafting from the glass. Not very malty which is the way I like ’em. Mango, peaches, pineapple, absolutely delicious, almost perfection in a glass for this IPA lover. Rather expensive (like Ruination) but you bet I’ll be buying it now that it’s available in Texas. If you like the Southern California style of citrusy IPA, you will LOVE this one.
