San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Hazy orange with a medium white head. Nice hoppy aroma with mango, pineapple and orange. The taste was balanced and nicely fruity. Not extremely bitter but very enjoyable. I liked this one!

Pours a light nearly transparent gold. A thin head retains well as the beer is drunk. The hop flavor is pronounced citrus and is crisp and refreshing for an IPA. Overall I think the beer is a tad overrated, but is none the less a strong example of the category.

Pours gold with a thick white head. Aroma is pine and exotic tropical fruits. Taste is a mellow blend of pine, mango, and light malts. The hop resins linger in the aftertaste. Pleasant IPA & good session beer.

(bottle). Not overhyped or over-hopped. This is a world class IPA. Hazy gold complexion with thick long-lasting head. Flavors include ripe fruits of apricot and mango. Smooth mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Refrigerated bottle set out on the counter for a little bit, compliments of sparky. Pours translucent deep golden with light orange hue and medium bright white head that dissapates quickly. Some lacing, medium body, low carbonation, and light estery aroma (mostly citrus and a hint of pine). Taste is citrus, light pine, and light bitter hop finish. Back to back comparision with Bells Two-Hearted ale, so close but this edges out two-hearted ale.

Originally reviewed: 7/23/09. I was so pumped to see bottles of this at my local store. Whenever a beer has this high of a rating, I wonder if it really is that good. This lives up to the hype incredibly. Poured this into my tulip glass. Pours a dark orange with a good inch-sized ivory head on top. Decent retention, but little lacing. The scent on this brew is phenomenal! Huge orange, tangerine, pineapple, lemon scents all over this. Absolutely wonderful smell. The mouth is crisp and wonderfully bubbly. Excellent for gulping. Flavor is big citrusy notes with some bitter grapefruit, sweet oranges, and tangy lemons. Finishes bitter and a bit on the drying side. Theres some sweet notes in there that balance this out well. The alcohol is pretty well hidden but makes itself known near the end of the bottle. Oh yes. I could drink this all night. This isnt as bold and in your face as I was expecting. This is just an unbelievably good IPA. Freaking highly recommend.

On tap at Ray's. Clear dark golden, soft white head. Nose is bubblegum, mango fruity hop nose. Soft and smooth on the palate and really well balanced from sweet to bitter. Resinous hops with just enough malt sweetness. Big fan ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2012 I prefer a ipa with a bit more of a malt backbone. But it is a good sd style ipa.
