San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12 oz bottle: Amber color. Sweet tangerine and lychee hop aroma, very distinct and fragrant. Full flavored, honey and melon, rather balanced bitterness. Just a very good beer.

Tried in draft. Hoppy American IPA, though it tastes more Colorado than Pacific Northwest. Great taste and finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I enjoyed Sculpin from a 12oz bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. The beer pours a dark, golden, orange that looks as refreshing as it tastes. There was about a finger and a half of paper white head with good lacing on the glass. The aroma is very strong and is dominated by citrus, floral, and fresh characteristics. I picked up lots of orange and grapefruit. This is a medium-heavy bodied beer that feels hearty and sweet with a nice amount of carbonation and buttery smooth finish. It is a great level of bitterness compared to lots of other IPAs. Ill probably pick up another sixer of Sculpin as long as I can not look at the price.

Bottle - orange gold pour with a big white head. Aroma is caramel, nettles, grapefruit and cereal malt. Taste is nicely balanced reasonable amount of hop dryness with a fruity sweetness.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle enjoyed at home
Copper hazy, big beige frothy head. Smell of grapefruit, citrus, pine, hints of caramel, nice malts. Moderate sweet, some fruityness, citrus, pine, wood, zest. Biting tail, heavy bitter, resin pine and zest. Very nice stuff

Picked up single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, MN. Pours a semi-clear golden orange colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates. Aroma of light grapefruit, tangerine, a hint of mango and caramel malt. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of a solid tropical fruit-style IPA. Finish is semi-dry at first with a lingering bitterness that really takes its time. Tongue shock recovery time, about 3 minutes.

Pour: Golden orange amber. Head is a creamy white with nice lacing. Bouquet: Clementine citrus, raw sugar, piney, and floral hops. The Sip: Toasted malt notes start off and fade into the hops. These herbal and floral hops spring up through the malt notes and burst citrus onto the scene. There is a nice hop bitterness which cleanses the palate of the malt makes Sculpin very well balance. Sculpin reminds me of apricot jam, orange-marmalade, light creamy malts. Toasted bread. Deep resin. Mouth-Feel: Small, sharp carbonation. Medium body. Tart pucker on finish. Overall: Exceptional. An excellent intensely enjoyable IPA. Complex flavor notes, and very well balanced. You could drink this with almost anything and it would steal the show, I would suggest just drinking this alone so nothing spoils your palate. Everyone needs to try this beer.
