San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Interesting beer. Thought I should try this as I like more balanced IPAs that have the malt backbone to support the hops. The pour looked great, clear amber/copper color with white head and smelt strongly of malts, maybe a hint of piney hops in the nose, but mostly the caramel & breadiness of the malts broke through. Slight hint of grapefruit in the nose, but not as much as I would have liked. Taste wise it wasnt at all what I was expecting, strong malt-forward beer here that had a strong caramel and breadiness/yeast like flavor with the grapefruit noticeable, but not dominate. For an IPA I was baffled as to how the hops had fallen to the back in this beer. Mouthfeel is great, its a very drinkable beer thats very smooth, almost no bitterness to this beer, probably due to the lack of dominant hops. Light carbonation. All-in-all a good solid beer, but not at all what I expected in a balanced IPA. Most of the time I think IPAs as overly hopped up and never would have figured thered be an IPA that was overly malted up.

(Bottle) Clear orange body with big off-white/orange head of fine bubbles which reduce to rocky peaks. Aroma of orange, tropical fruit, some grass, pine and earth. Flavor is full of resiny hop bitterness, mildly sweet caramel; grass, pine. Medium body, oily.

355ml can from Uncle Dan. Amber with a mild haze on the pour and a small and lasting white head atop. Vibrant and punchy tropical fruit aromas: mango, peach, lychee, pineapple, passionfruit et al. Mid-weight, gently carbonated with a subtle oily texture and long, intense pine and grapefruit bitterness to finish. The malts are present but in the background playing a supporting role to the aromatics and freshness of the hops.

Quite clear amber, medium soapy head and some spotted lacing. Fantastic to the nose with peach, mango, citrus. Very crisp attack, with all the hoppy character in the aroma that kicks in. No much of malts here, but it tastes bloody good! Light body and soft carbonation, very smooth. Awesome IPA.

355 ml bottle. This is very good. The aroma is packed with spruce, floral, earthy and citrus notes. The taste is a lot of the same, very earthy and floral flavours with a hint of citrus at the back that really elevates the beer. The malt sweetness is far in the back, it doesnt feel that balanced but the flavours are top notch. The mouthfeel is heavy, just a slight oily feel to it. The taste stays on your palate for a long time.

Solid IPA! Wont blow your doors off, but goes down very smooth. Better then a lot of other high scoring IPAs!

Bright yellow pour with a persistent creamy head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, grass booze. Bright citrus and tropical fruit flavours, lightly woody, earthy bitterness is kept under control. Mouthfeel is suitably refreshing. While its not my absolute favourite, its clearly a quality IPA.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2017 Pours deep clear yellow. Thin head. Solid flavour and medium body full of fruity flavour, hop bitterness and biscuity malt balance. Long hop palate leading to floral bitterness aftertaste. Mango and apricot very present throughout. Fruitily bold, refreshing and quite nice.
