San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: SEP 18, 2013 Poured from a 12oz bottle to a tulip. Truly from the time you open the bottle Sculpin reveals itself as something special. The aroma bursts forth from the tulip. Citrus and stone fruit come to the fore. The earthy hops and even a tinge of cat pee funk linger underneath. Intriguing, this is absolutely one of the best smelling IPAS out there. The appearance is beautiful in it’s simplicity and clarity. Pours like a medium colored lager with a minimumal white head. The carbonation is light. The taste is an explosion of strong grapefruit and lemony citrus hops. The front of the tongue is awash in juicy hop flavor and bitterness. A mild rock candy like sweetness hits in mid swallow before the bitterness returns on the finish. Yowza! This brew really is a marvel! It is well deserved of the accolades heaped upon it. One nosing, one sip and one swallow and you’ll know you’re in for a game changer. I’m editing this review to reflect that in my area (Twin Cities) I can find this right at $9.99 a six pack. I’ve seen several post that call Sculpin pricey but here at least it’s the same as other staples in my rotation such as Bell’s Two Hearted, or Odells and cheaper per ounce than Stone IPA or Surly Furious.

Spicy bitterness to it, something missing from many IPAs. Very good flavor, very strong citrus element.

In one word... delicious. Aroma is tropical fruit with some citrus in there too. First big sip is a beautiful array of grapefruit, mango and other tropical fruit flavors, a little pine and very slight pinch of malt. Finishes off with more fruity flavor and a good amount of bitterness. Wouldn't change a thing on this one.

Great taste and hop flavor! Wasn’t overly hoppy but had just the right amount. Very similar to Union Pizza And Brewery in Fergus Falls,MN Traveller IPA ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Delicious hoppy aroma with hefty citrus on the palate. Clean flavor with a great balance of bitter and light sweetness with a small kick of light sourness. Finishes with a medium bitterness and a lot of hop.

Loved the first six pack I had because it was spicy and nicey but I just bought another sixer and not spicy at all and the flavor just wasn't there for me so I guess it's just a difference in batches but for the price I prolly won't take the gamble again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
