San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured into a snifter out of a 22oz bomber. Pours a nearly clear brownish gold with a half finger white head. Head retention isn’t especially impressive but lacing is good. Aroma is an amazing balance between malt and hops. Earthy hops with a very faint hint of tropical fruit along with a healthy dose of wood and caramel. A touch of biscuit and apricot. Faint tropcial fruit in the flavor balanced with pine and earthy hops. Caramel is quite prominent with lots of wood. There is a little bit of toast but it is faint along with a vanilla, almost bourbon, note. Bitterness is fairly high but not harsh at all and lasts long after the flavors have dissipated. Full, smooth mouthfeel is nearly perfect. Overall, an amazingly balance IPA that is extremely easy to drink. A great marriage between malt and hop and bother perfectly compliment one another. A must-try should you ever come across it.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2017 On draft at 21st Street Brewers Bar Aroma 8/10: Tropical fruit esters and piney hops Appearance 4 /5: clear amber with lacy head. A very classic looking beer. Palate 3 /5: moderate carbonation with full mouthfeel Taste 8/10: extremely hoppy - piney, fruity, and fresh. Finishes bright without a lot of bitterness. Overall 17/20: a classic west coast ipa. Sometimes you’re just in the mood for something bitter and bright, and I’ll always go back to this one. Final: 4.0

Apperance orange, slightly hazy. Lots of hops in the aroma, tropical fruit. Fantastic balance between fruitiness, sweetnes and bitterness. This is one of the classical west coast ipa’s and still one of the very best.

Bright orange pour. Tropical fruit aromas, mostly mango. Taste is great the hops are crisp and juicy but yet bitter. Really good IPA

I’m not always a fan of IPAs particularly as American brewers have taken to trying to make them as bitter as possible but this is very tasty. Great summer ale with fruit aroma and crisp citrusy taste with a great hoppy fade.
