San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Can into a pint glass from The Drinkery, Londonderry NH. Aroma is strong pine, herbs, fruit, spruce, while still being able to glean a maltiness, and some basement toward the bottom of the glass. Appearance is mild hazy orangish yellow with mild sparkle but nice foamy white two-finger width head, mild lacing. Taste is dominant mild-to-moderate bitter but with some sweet fruitiness throughout for balance including into long-lasting finish. Palate is refreshing light-to-medium body with thin, slightly creamy texture and average carbonation. Overall, above average appearance and palate but wont knock your socks off. Very interesting aroma with some of that complexity translating over to the taste but a little over to the bitter side for me.

Delightful fruity/citrus aroma, with bit of cereal behind. Taste is very west coast ipa, lots of grapefruit, other fruit. Quite dry, but a little sweetness in there to start, before fading to bitter, bitter, bitter. Finish is somewhat muted.

On tap. Pours a medium gold with a white head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of citrus, pine, and grass, and the same notes are in the flavor followed by a bitter middle and bitter, slightly sweet aftertaste over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: APR 22, 2016 Gold color, clear, tight lace. Full body, silky texture, packed with a rainbow of flavors, very complex and elegant, moderately hot mouthfeel, long on the palate. Bitter but not dry. Hoppy, herby, resiny. Delicious, worth looking for.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 The citrusy aroma is really great. The taste is very, very good - first citrusy/fruity hops and then a decent bit of pine resin on the finish with almost no malt present. Its medium bodied - not quite light, but definitely not heavy. If you like IPAs, this one is a must try if you see it.

Bottle. Great nose of fruit and herbs and pine. Aroma of orange, grapefruit, peach and other stoen fruit together with nice floweriness and pine. Finishes bitter with sweet malts at the same time. Simply amazing stuff

Pours light straw with thin white head. Really nice aroma of citrus. But the flavor is somewhat lacking. Not a lot of bitterness. Not bad just not a kick in the pants I thought the hops would be.

Bottle. Translucent golden pour. Half inch head. Aroma of pine and sweet malts. Tastes sweet up front with a bitter hop finish. Not as hoppy as I expected. Soft mouthfeel.

Bomber. Appearance is a light golden bronze color with a cap of off-white foam and bubbles. Lots of pine resin, tropical fruit, grapefruit and lemon in the aroma. The taste starts with a potent dose of tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit rind along with some pine, hops resin and toasted malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a clean, bitter citrus finish. Overall, a fantastic West Coast style IPA with just enough balance and complexity.
