San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Tasty, hop-oriented "ipa" nearing DIPA I hope, because its juicy piney grapefruity goodness is got to be nearing that territory. Pours a light tan wheaty looking pour with minimal white head. Nose is straight citrus hop. Flavor similar but with a more IPA oriented deadness where the DIPA becomes more potent in its hop profile this one wears off quick. Very drinkable and very good IPA.

Flaska frn SB. Klar orange med fingertjockt vitt skum. Tydlig doft av citrus och exotisk frukt. Ganska tunn kropp, ngot torr.

Pours light straw with thin white head. Really nice aroma of citrus. But the flavor is somewhat lacking. Not a lot of bitterness. Not bad just not a kick in the pants I thought the hops would be.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 The citrusy aroma is really great. The taste is very, very good - first citrusy/fruity hops and then a decent bit of pine resin on the finish with almost no malt present. Its medium bodied - not quite light, but definitely not heavy. If you like IPAs, this one is a must try if you see it.

Enjoyed via draft in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a slightly-darker-than-medium amber color with a moderate white head. The nose brings the expected strong character of west coast hops, with what seems to be an especially enthusiastic nod to Cascade, Amarillo, and perhaps just a bit of Simcoe. Hops overwhelm malt in the nose, and no discernable sweetness is noticeable in the nose. The palate is full without being cloying and bitter without being puckering. The aforementioned hops make their presence known in the apparoach, followed by a very nice note of hop resin on the tongue. Malt character is perceptable, but is pretty thoroughly muddled by lingering hop flavor. Sweetness is mild but pleasant. The finish is clean and semi-sweet. Overall, this is a tremendous beer; one that belies a relatively light abv with heavy flavor and enough finesse to keep from being a cloying bully on the palate. Quite good.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2013 Appearance: not much head at all, but it has a nice bright orange-gold appearance, and the little head it does have leaves good lacing. Aroma - lots of orange and grapefruit citrus, some pineapple, and lots of sweet caramel malts. Flavor - mmmm! Nice grapefruit and orange profile with a solid malt backing and some hops at the end. Very well-balanced. I was expecting something a little heavier and sweeter from the aroma, but this isnt a sugar-bomb at all. This is really easy to drink, yet full of flavor - doesnt whack you over the head with hops, but they are there. What a refreshing IPA. This would be even better in the summer. The more I taste, the yummier it gets - lovely citrus at first, and then the subtlest of hops and malt to complete it. Nomnom. The taste and palate of this are just perfect! Enjoyed slightly beyond the "best by" date - wonder how this would be fresh? JUNE 2013 UPDATE: Now enjoying this on a hot summer day. Every bit as good as the first one I had late last year. Its fresh, but it smells and tastes the same as I remember my slightly expired one did. If this beer had a slightly more impressive appearance and more floral, balanced aroma, itd easily rank as the top overall single IPA in my book. As it is, the palate and taste are definitely #1 for me, and thats what matters most, IMO.

Delightful fruity/citrus aroma, with bit of cereal behind. Taste is very west coast ipa, lots of grapefruit, other fruit. Quite dry, but a little sweetness in there to start, before fading to bitter, bitter, bitter. Finish is somewhat muted.

Bottle at WilliamK, Helsinki. Pours cloudy golden with a big frothy head. Aroma is rich in tropical fruitiness; peach, passion and orange mix, also some pine and floral notes. Taste is initially sweet, but hoppy bitterness appears in the middle and the finish is typically dry and very bitter. Rich exotic fruitiness dominates the taste with at least peach, apricot and mango featuring with the usual citrus. The palate is medium bodied and slick. Overall this is a very rich and varied IPA with strong tropical fruitiness.

On tap. Pours a medium gold with a white head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of citrus, pine, and grass, and the same notes are in the flavor followed by a bitter middle and bitter, slightly sweet aftertaste over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
