San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz bottle poured into my snifter. A- Body is a nearly transparent bright orange hue that pours with a nice 1-2 finger creamy white head. Head subsides quickly leaving a thick collar and very little lacing in the glass. S-What comes through first is a perfect balance of sweet caramel malt and a blast of citrus hops. In the background is a slight spicy hop presence as well. T- Pink grapefruit, orange and citrus upfront with a substantial caramel malt backbone. The finish is all spicy hops as a big spicy hop bitterness blends with spicy hop flavors. At first the bitterness seems almost overbearing and prickly but after a few sips the spiciness really comes through more than the bitterness. P- Medium to high tingly carbonation and a medium-to light weight, full quite oily, smooth body. O- This brew is pretty awesome. Brews that emphasize the citrus/spicy hop combo are hard to come by and this one does an excellent job with it. Really happy that I had the opportunity to try this beer! Too bad it is a limited release. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-09-2009 15:05:02

Ive been fairly impressed with the offerings from Ballast Point that Ive been able to try so far. Its newer to me, but good beer. The aroma is booming with fruity hop smells of peaches, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Had a nice golden tone to it with some haze. Some sweetness to start followed by a good medium bitter. If you havent had a chance to try Ballast Point, I suggest you do.

Draft: pours an orangish copper color with a nice white head. Aroma is floral and citrusy. The taste is full... Pine and grapefruit... This is nice, tropical and fruity. One of my favorite IPAs for sure.

22oz. bomber, with a big thank you to stefanje! Pours a clear golden orange with a creamy one finger white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma is very nice, with island fruits, floral, citrus, pine, and light caramel. Flavor is more of the same, with a milder but enjoyable hops bite that lingers a bit. I have been looking forward to trying this one for a long time, and it lived up to expectations quite nicely. Its right up there with some of the best IPAs the West Coast has to offer. Thanks again Stefan!

On Nitro tap at brewery. Beautiful golden pour with thick, puffy, white head that only nitro can do. Nose is citrus, pine, and some tropical fruits. Taste follows the nose but the hops are dialed down a little compared to other IPAs. Mouthfeel is crazy good and creamy.

12 oz bottle Whole Foods. Golden pour, lively bubbles, medium-sized white head with nice retention; medium lacing all the way down. Aroma floral, lemon, piney, bread, caramel-like sweetness. Solid malt backbone; clear, bitter, clean hop finish. Medium body, smooth, granual carbonation. Overall, nothing about this jumps in your face, but it screams clean and balanced. Not the most memorable beer and I struggle with this being 100th percentile overall, but this is an extremely solid textbook IPA.

If you havent had this west coast style ipa, you are missing out. This is one of my favorite ipas out there. Easy to drink, get balance, and big hop bite and aroma. A must have in the fridge at all times.

12 fl. oz. bottle from Club de Cervezas. Pours a clear, sparkling orange color with a medium sized white frothy head that diminishes slowly and leaves a good creamy film. Intense and powerful hoppy aroma, a real hop perfume. Notes of grapefruit, ice-cream bean, lemongrass, cedar, green apples, rose apple, pine cones and even basil. Really great, purely hoppy. Taste is very bitter, intense and bold without being a hop-juice. Herbal bitterness leaves some space for soft to mild fruit tartness to be perceivable. An all hop brew, with barely any malty hints. I can say, in a hop-head mood, I love it and see little ground to improve it, but its not the pinnacle of complexity. Medium body and carbonation. Very very drinkable and admirably brewed. I would have this anytime I need a hop fix. Aftertaste is massively hoppy. More bitter and slightly less tart than the Grapefruit Sculpin. My new IPA type-specimen.
