San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On Nitro tap at brewery. Beautiful golden pour with thick, puffy, white head that only nitro can do. Nose is citrus, pine, and some tropical fruits. Taste follows the nose but the hops are dialed down a little compared to other IPAs. Mouthfeel is crazy good and creamy.

12 oz bottle Whole Foods. Golden pour, lively bubbles, medium-sized white head with nice retention; medium lacing all the way down. Aroma floral, lemon, piney, bread, caramel-like sweetness. Solid malt backbone; clear, bitter, clean hop finish. Medium body, smooth, granual carbonation. Overall, nothing about this jumps in your face, but it screams clean and balanced. Not the most memorable beer and I struggle with this being 100th percentile overall, but this is an extremely solid textbook IPA.

If you havenít had this west coast style ipa, you are missing out. This is one of my favorite ipaís out there. Easy to drink, get balance, and big hop bite and aroma. A must have in the fridge at all times.

12 fl. oz. bottle from Club de Cervezas. Pours a clear, sparkling orange color with a medium sized white frothy head that diminishes slowly and leaves a good creamy film. Intense and powerful hoppy aroma, a real hop perfume. Notes of grapefruit, ice-cream bean, lemongrass, cedar, green apples, rose apple, pine cones and even basil. Really great, purely hoppy. Taste is very bitter, intense and bold without being a hop-juice. Herbal bitterness leaves some space for soft to mild fruit tartness to be perceivable. An all hop brew, with barely any malty hints. I can say, in a hop-head mood, I love it and see little ground to improve it, but itís not the pinnacle of complexity. Medium body and carbonation. Very very drinkable and admirably brewed. I would have this anytime I need a hop fix. Aftertaste is massively hoppy. More bitter and slightly less tart than the Grapefruit Sculpin. My new IPA type-specimen.

Clear, orange colour with big, stable head. Nice lacing too. After opening the bottle, it feels big punch of citrus (grapefruit!), exotic fruits (mango, maybe even passion fruit), some floral note and malty base on background. Taste is light to medium sweet, medium to heavy bitter, light dry. Finish is very long, biiter, but not harsh or tart. Soft carbonation. Medium to full body. Fantastic, very drinkable, no doubt one of the best IPA Iíve ever tried.

Lots of lemony grapefruit and pine in the nose. Looking for a little more malt to balance all those hop flavors. Some honey up front in the taste. however the bitterness does not over power the taste. Clean and very dry finish. Very good. There could be a couple of IPAs I like better, but this is up there.

Pours a nice golden amber with little lacing. The nose is strong with floral and citrus. Grapefruit and mango definately mango and a little orange peel. The hops lingers forever, I love this beer.

Clear, strongly-hued sunshine yellow. Very sharp, dank, resiny aroma. Tangerine, orange zest, basil (?!) - all come through in very modular, defined aroma. Thinnish, elegant but dusty maltiness, anchored by rich notes of mango, tangerine and cantaloupe. Creamy, judiciously carbonated finish.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2014 Golden. Aroma is peach with superb clarity. Taste is peach, bitterness, mild floral - perfect! Good moderate level of bitterness. Palate is mild bitterness with great finish. Overall, best straight up IPA Iíve yet had. Wowzers!

Pours a clear orange with white head. Aroma or tropical and citrus fruits and some sweet notes. Taste is a nice clean assertive bitterness throughout with a caramel backbone. Pine, grapefruit, mango, and biscuity flavors. Medium bodied. Very well done IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
