San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 Re-rated: Ive enjoyed this a few times more since my initial rating. I do like it better, and perhaps appreciate the velvety mouthfeel and smoothness of it more than I did. 1st rating: What am I missing here? Sorry, but I was just underwhelmed by this beer. Is it a good IPA? Yup. Maybe even in my top ten...I will have to try a few more at different sessions. But I just cant see why this beer is rated so incredibly highly. I didnt think it had much of a nose, the head was nothing special, and the taste was characterized by smooth but very uncomplicated hops. A very dry and lingering bitter aftertaste, which is okay. I just dont see what all the fuss is about. I dont even consider this the best IPA from San Diego...I find Alesmiths IPA significantly more impressive, and probably Green Flashs West Coast IPA a tad better.

12 ounce bottle divided into tulip glasses. Im glad to see this distributed in the Chicago market in the past few weeks. Its the gold standard, in my mind, for the single ipa style. Ive benefitted from a fresh bottle, less than a month old, so the hops were at their juicy finest. Slightly herbaceous and veggie in character, and those hops pair up deliciously in a non-citrus sort of way. Medium bodied, ruby red, good amount of bubble and foam presence. At 7% abv, theyve crafted a finely balanced ipa that you can drink without knocking out your senses nor your tastebuds. If you havent tried this one, its worth hunting down.

Out of the bomber: Clear brassy orange with off-white, orange hued foam which settles after a couple minutes, leaves some lace. If you want to know what hops smell like, get a whiff of this. Pine-y sappy, grapefruit, apricot, some caramel, some grass. The flavor has a very clean and crisp bitterness, nicely balanced by straight forward malty sweetness. Very approachable, as IPAs go. Not over the top. Very well balanced. The carbonation is adequate. Mouthfeel holds up well.

Pours a clear orange with white head. Aroma or tropical and citrus fruits and some sweet notes. Taste is a nice clean assertive bitterness throughout with a caramel backbone. Pine, grapefruit, mango, and biscuity flavors. Medium bodied. Very well done IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle unknown date. Served around 45F. Thanks to Ryan for this unexpected extra!

Pours lightly hazy golden amber with a three finger fluffy white head that holds a great cap and leaves nice spotty lacing.

Aroma is lemon, apricot, floral & grassy hops, some light tropical fruits, some melon, a bit of pineapple, some orange and grapefruit, caramel and bready malt. Good to very good strength.

Flavor is citrus, lemon, orange, grapefruit, some pineapple and apricot, a little bit resinous, balanced against some bread and light caramel malt, finishes with very good bitterness. Minimal alcohol.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit oily, medium carbonation.

An excellent IPA for sure although the hype train leaves a tad bit to be desired, particularly in the aroma department. Im stoked to finally get a chance to try Sculpin and while it may not be quite everything I had hoped it is still a fantastic IPA and one I would seek out again.

HOPSHUNTER (742) - Tampa, Florida, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Bottle. Light, clear, golden color with a massive off-white head. Nose is hoppy and spicy, abundant grapefruit and pine notes with lighter notes of peach, caramel, and grass. Medium to full body with a sticky mouth feel and good carbonation. Flavor is slightly sweet and herbal, up front I get lemon peel, grapefruit, and pine resin, there is a good amount of bitterness but it is a bit aspirin like and stays with you for a long time. Pale biscuity malts are present but dont do too much to balance the beer out. Secondary notes of toffee, grass, and spice. Finishes aggressively bitter.
