San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Light, clear, golden color with a massive off-white head. Nose is hoppy and spicy, abundant grapefruit and pine notes with lighter notes of peach, caramel, and grass. Medium to full body with a sticky mouth feel and good carbonation. Flavor is slightly sweet and herbal, up front I get lemon peel, grapefruit, and pine resin, there is a good amount of bitterness but it is a bit aspirin like and stays with you for a long time. Pale biscuity malts are present but dont do too much to balance the beer out. Secondary notes of toffee, grass, and spice. Finishes aggressively bitter.

Pours gold with a thick white head. Aroma is pine and exotic tropical fruits. Taste is a mellow blend of pine, mango, and light malts. The hop resins linger in the aftertaste. Pleasant IPA & good session beer.

Sample on tap at Eureka. Pours a deep gold, with whitish head. Strong aroma of floral and grass. Tastes of hops and grass. A very distinctive IPA. Thumbs up.

From a bottle. Golden orange in color with a small white head. Big citrus fruit aroma. Orange, grapefruit, some sweeter fruit like peach jolly ranchers. Flavor is sweet with caramel malt and some peach that lead to a slightly bitter finish. Some lemon is present in the finish, too. This is fairly easy drinking due to it being only lightly bitter.

Bomber. Looks like a perfect IPA, and smells as good as any beer Ive ever had. Just filled the room with delightful hop smells. Its crisp, piney, and delicious with a fairly long finish. I enjoyed every drop of this great beer, but I cant say its worth the extremely high price tag when there are other great IPAs available for a fraction of the price.

HKdIPA (732) - HONG KONG - JUL 20, 2014
Bottle from SD at home. Bright (almost neon) translucent orange pour - looks delicious. Aroma is apricot and peachy sweetness - not that strong. Taste is fruity hoppy with a very strong crisp bitterness. Not as big as I thought it would be. Solid crisp IPA with some juicy flavors. I think my expectations were too high.

71 day old 12oz bottle to snifter. Crystal clear copper. White head. I wonder how fresh it needs to be to live up to the hype. Still good.

UPDATED: APR 1, 2010 Bottle courtesy of hopscotch by way of WeeheavySD. Pours clear straw colored gold with a small white head and intricate lacing. Incredibe aroma, one of the best smelling beers Ive had the pleasure of drinking. This thing is packed with mango, pineapple and grapefruit smells with a piney note. The taste is strong on the citrus with grapefruit and pineapple coming through the strongest on the finish. Not overly bitter but its definitely an IPA. Again not my style but this is a very impressive IPA.
