San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap. Pours a medium gold with a white head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of citrus, pine, and grass, and the same notes are in the flavor followed by a bitter middle and bitter, slightly sweet aftertaste over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Ray's. Clear dark golden, soft white head. Nose is bubblegum, mango fruity hop nose. Soft and smooth on the palate and really well balanced from sweet to bitter. Resinous hops with just enough malt sweetness. Big fan ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber. Appearance is a light golden bronze color with a cap of off-white foam and bubbles. Lots of pine resin, tropical fruit, grapefruit and lemon in the aroma. The taste starts with a potent dose of tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit rind along with some pine, hops resin and toasted malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a clean, bitter citrus finish. Overall, a fantastic West Coast style IPA with just enough balance and complexity.

Bottle poured into a Sam Adams pint glass produced a finger worth of white head that laced out wonderfully. The body of the brew was a clear copper in color I got huge aromas of citrus fruits and flowery grasses coming off the nose of this one. It was really a pleasant aroma not harsh like some IPA’s it did add a lot to the experience. The flavor defiantly was a west coast take on a IPA very hop forward. There is also enough sweetness form the malts to keep this brew from being one of those one dimensional brews. It had a light to medium feel to it with good carbonation. I enjoyed the bomber and would love to have another glass. It was worth the wait and I will continue to look for a fresh bottle in Mass if I can come across one. I have been looking for two years now with no luck, they just don’t stick around. Now I know why.

Pours a clear golden with a good sized head. Very nice aroma of citrus hops, some caramel as well. Light sweetness, slightly strong bitterness, clean finish.

They must add a half ton of hops to this after the boil. The hop flavor is just ridiculous. The amount of hops that San Diego goes though is staggering. Anywho, malt is well in the back, bitterness is understated, and hop flavor with all sticky grassy citrus-y goodness. No taste of alcohol at all. A fine IPA. Might be the hoppy-ist single IPA I have had. If you really pay attention the malt under all the good hops isn’t that great, but it is buried so deep I don’t care.

dambor (792) - Berlin, GERMANY - AUG 11, 2015
Pours dark yellow with medium head, leaving a nice lacing on glass. Aroma: white tropical fruit, mango, peach, some pine tree. Nice intense and complex aroma. Taste: citrus fruit mixed with very pleasant bitterness, exposing the hoppy crisp thanks to a relatively low body. Nice, balanced palate. ABV well hidden. Complex but at the same time very drinkable. That’s what an IPA should be.
