San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2013 Pours golden orange color with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and pine hops. Taste reminds me more of a double IPA than just an IPA. Big bold taste with big mouthful. Tons of piney hops and alcohol with a bitter spicy bite at the end.

Aroma: Nice grapefruit/lemon hops; herbal, floral. Bread, light caramel malt.
Flavor: Tangerine/grapefruit/citrus rind. Floral, and tongue-numbing hops spiciness. A little bready malt. Moderate bitterness.

Bottle thanks to pellegjr - cheers my friend! Pours hazy orange with thin but lasting bright white head. Aroma is a fruit explosion of mango, papaya, apricot, sweet orange, grapefruit - wonderful. Taste is another juicy fruit hit with tropical notes combining with pine resin notes; nice dry finish & a lasting bitterness. What a cracker of an IPA.

Poured from bomber into tall glass. Appearance: Hazy honey gold with large stark white head and pretty lacing. Aroma: Very tropical and hoppy, with mango, grapefruit, lemon and a herbal spiciness. Taste: Once again, very hoppy, but not as tropical. Some grapefruit and tropical notes, but the herbal spiciness steals the show. Quite bitter throughout, with just a minimal malt presence. Palate: Moderate carbonation with a very creamy body and an exceptionally dry finish. Overall: Very strong IPA, but the taste didnt quite live up to the aroma or my expectations. Great choice for a West Coast bitter fix.

Sample @ MWF. Hazy golden with one finger white head. Aroma of grass, pine, citrus and orange with some grains in the background. Taste of bitter lemon and grapefruit peels with grainy malts also noticeable. Nice prickly mouthfeel with long lasting bitterness.

Finally got my hands on a nice variety of fresh Ballast Point brews, and this one was "just" a good IPA, nothing crazy like hype would have you believe. I found the grapefruit version of Sculpin better.
