San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours an unclear orange with an average, off-white head. Aromas of light malts, caramel, and lots of hops (pine, orange, grapefruit, peach). Flavor is slightly sweet with a strong hop flavor. Hop notes of grapefruit, pine and other sweet fruits nicely balanced by some moderate malts.

Pours gold with a thick white head. Aroma is pine and exotic tropical fruits. Taste is a mellow blend of pine, mango, and light malts. The hop resins linger in the aftertaste. Pleasant IPA & good session beer.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 Re-rated: Iíve enjoyed this a few times more since my initial rating. I do like it better, and perhaps appreciate the velvety mouthfeel and smoothness of it more than I did. 1st rating: What am I missing here? Sorry, but I was just underwhelmed by this beer. Is it a good IPA? Yup. Maybe even in my top ten...I will have to try a few more at different sessions. But I just canít see why this beer is rated so incredibly highly. I didnít think it had much of a nose, the head was nothing special, and the taste was characterized by smooth but very uncomplicated hops. A very dry and lingering bitter aftertaste, which is okay. I just donít see what all the fuss is about. I donít even consider this the best IPA from San Diego...I find Alesmithís IPA significantly more impressive, and probably Green Flashís West Coast IPA a tad better.

Out of the bomber: Clear brassy orange with off-white, orange hued foam which settles after a couple minutes, leaves some lace. If you want to know what hops smell like, get a whiff of this. Pine-y sappy, grapefruit, apricot, some caramel, some grass. The flavor has a very clean and crisp bitterness, nicely balanced by straight forward malty sweetness. Very approachable, as IPAs go. Not over the top. Very well balanced. The carbonation is adequate. Mouthfeel holds up well.

Wittales (762) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Appearance was amber gold with diminishing whitish creamy 1 finger head, spotty lacing.Aromas where sweet honey malt with grapefriut, lemons, oranges and spices. Taste was sweet figs, honey sweet malty backbone with melony citrus lemony hops comes through in the back. Palate was smooth creamy carbonation with beautiful medium balance of sweetness and hops. Wonderful IPA...
