San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

330ml bottle. Aroma is sweet orange, pine and caramel. Flavour very much the same with a lovely restrained bitter finish. Beautiful full body. Very nice.

Finally got my hands on a nice variety of fresh Ballast Point brews, and this one was "just" a good IPA, nothing crazy like hype would have you believe. I found the grapefruit version of Sculpin better.

On tap. Clear Golden pour, minimal White head. Hoppy Nose, with a little yeast. Taste is crisp and hoppy, clear notes of citrus. Medium body, average carbonation.

PunkAGM2015 rate catchup from notes. 6/6/15. Hazy gold. Oily with soft carbonation. Big grapefruit (not so different from the Sculpin Grapefruit in many ways) and tropical notes. Fruity deliciousness. Outstanding IPA,

Pours clear copper hue with a bright white head that seems to last for quite a while. Smells of tangerines, caramel malts, grapefruit, lemon zest, pine a bit of earth. The caramel seems to mix well with the citrusy tangerines and grapefruit giving this a terrific aroma on the nose. Sweet oranges and tangerines on the palate lead the way but quickly turn to a stronger hoppy presence. Nice piney presence mixes well with the earthiness but the sweet citrus fruits and strong hops are the predominate flavors. Wonderful!

This IPA pours a gorgeous clear bright golden orange color with a good sized bone-white head on it that left spotting lacing on my glass. The nose on this beer is very unique and interesting for an IPA. I think mango is the strongest scent followed by passion fruit, peaches, lemon and orange zest, floral hops, and a slight pine bitterness as well. The smell on this beer is leaping from my glass, and it never left for the entire beer. The flavor profile is loaded with citrus fruits with grapefruit and tangerines being very dominant followed up with only a slight touch of caramel malt. The hops are extremely fresh and vibrant on this offering. The malt is only barely noticeable, but somehow supports the hops beautifully. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation that left a very dry finish on the back of my palate. The drinkability is superb on this beer, and is one of the best IPAs Ive have ever had the pleasure of tasting

Pours a golden orange with a nice off white head that fades and leaves good lacing in the glass. Aroma is lots of mango and apricots, a bit of caramel malt. Taste is very bright and fruity with tons of apricot and a bit of mango, bitter hops and then some sweetness then more hops cleanse the palate, good ipa but stone ipa is still way better.

This was recommended to me by the bartender at Najas on Redendo Pier. What a fantastic IPA. One of the best Ive ever had. Tons of hop flavor, well balanced with malts. Great palate. Ill take 10 more please.

Bottle. Pours medium honey color. Big frothy off white head. Juicy hop aroma. Juicy tropical citrus flavor. Nicely balanced. Very good IPA. Have been seeing this more in my area, but at $14 for a six pack its price point is well above local IPAs of similar quality.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Almost clear golden color with a nice rocky and steady white head (good lace). Rich tropical fruits aroma, with citrus notes (mandarin), spices (ginger) and flowers. Intense hop flavors, big tropical goodness, high bitterness, decent sweet malts and faint alcohol notes. Med-full body, good carbonation, long bitter finish, a bit too heavy but yummy. Cool.
