San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Had as part of a 4 beer flight at rattle and hum in NYC. First of the flight, very well balanced hoppiness with a citrus smell and after taste. Not overwhelmingly bitter

On tap at Coles in Buffalo. Pours light and clear with almost no head at all. Aroma is strong and delicious with citrus and very hoppy. Taste has a very mild bitter to it with the big citrus notes coming through.

Bottle. Aroma was quite fruity, citrus, peach, mango I picked up in addition to floral. Appearance is orange golden medium-full off-white head. Light sweet taste. Medium-light malt body, texture on the thin side, mild bitter finish. Smooth finish mixing hop and malt. Not my favorite IPA, but definitely one of the better ones out there.

Pours a light red-orange with a fluffy off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy; grassy, pine, citrus, pineapple, some grapefruit, and a bit of caramel. Taste is pine, grapefruit, bittersweet lemon and orange peel, some bready malt flavor and a bitter hops finish. Clean mouth feel; not the smoothest ever but still quite decent.

Pours orange with tall white head. All sorts of citrus and melon wafting from the glass. Not very malty which is the way I like em. Mango, peaches, pineapple, absolutely delicious, almost perfection in a glass for this IPA lover. Rather expensive (like Ruination) but you bet Ill be buying it now that its available in Texas. If you like the Southern California style of citrusy IPA, you will LOVE this one.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2015 Pretty much the perfect IPA, plus its always readily available. Sturdy enough malt backbone that lets bright apricot and citrus shine.

From San Diego. Bright translucent orange-copper with small watery white head. Lots of fruit in the smell - mango, pineapple, citrus. Tastes of fruity bitter hop and malt with a long slightly spicy finish. More malt and less hop than I expected. Body is crisp but juicy. Not very big and quite malty for an IPA but still very tasty.

Dark golden color with large, bubbly, bleach white head. There is a ton of lacing on each sip. The aroma is full of resiny hops with all the complexities of a big blend (grapefruit and pine). The flavors are mildly sweet with lots of bitterness and spciiness from the hops. There isnt any one character of the beer that really makes it pop, but the balance of the very strong flavors makes it extremely enjoyable.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2009 Bomber. This is a fantastic IPA. Pours very clear and has the citrus aroma in spades. White peach, grapefruit, lemon, honey. I think these beers go from the far "pine" spectrum to the far "citrus" spectrum. This is far on the citrus side. Fantastic and easy to drink, I could have this all day long. Rerated 11/25/09: from 4.1 to 4.5 this is amazing beer, Huge aroma of fresh citrus hops and absolutely delicious on my tongue. wow, killer beer.
