San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours clear copper hue with a bright white head that seems to last for quite a while. Smells of tangerines, caramel malts, grapefruit, lemon zest, pine a bit of earth. The caramel seems to mix well with the citrusy tangerines and grapefruit giving this a terrific aroma on the nose. Sweet oranges and tangerines on the palate lead the way but quickly turn to a stronger hoppy presence. Nice piney presence mixes well with the earthiness but the sweet citrus fruits and strong hops are the predominate flavors. Wonderful!

This IPA pours a gorgeous clear bright golden orange color with a good sized bone-white head on it that left spotting lacing on my glass. The nose on this beer is very unique and interesting for an IPA. I think mango is the strongest scent followed by passion fruit, peaches, lemon and orange zest, floral hops, and a slight pine bitterness as well. The smell on this beer is leaping from my glass, and it never left for the entire beer. The flavor profile is loaded with citrus fruits with grapefruit and tangerines being very dominant followed up with only a slight touch of caramel malt. The hops are extremely fresh and vibrant on this offering. The malt is only barely noticeable, but somehow supports the hops beautifully. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation that left a very dry finish on the back of my palate. The drinkability is superb on this beer, and is one of the best IPAs I’ve have ever had the pleasure of tasting

This was recommended to me by the bartender at Naja’s on Redendo Pier. What a fantastic IPA. One of the best I’ve ever had. Tons of hop flavor, well balanced with malts. Great palate. I’ll take 10 more please.

Pours a golden orange with a nice off white head that fades and leaves good lacing in the glass. Aroma is lots of mango and apricots, a bit of caramel malt. Taste is very bright and fruity with tons of apricot and a bit of mango, bitter hops and then some sweetness then more hops cleanse the palate, good ipa but stone ipa is still way better.

Pours dark yellow with medium head, leaving a nice lacing on glass. Aroma: white tropical fruit, mango, peach, some pine tree. Nice intense and complex aroma. Taste: citrus fruit mixed with very pleasant bitterness, exposing the hoppy crisp thanks to a relatively low body. Nice, balanced palate. ABV well hidden. Complex but at the same time very drinkable. That’s what an IPA should be.

Bottle. Pours medium honey color. Big frothy off white head. Juicy hop aroma. Juicy tropical citrus flavor. Nicely balanced. Very good IPA. Have been seeing this more in my area, but at $14 for a six pack its price point is well above local IPA’s of similar quality.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Almost clear golden color with a nice rocky and steady white head (good lace). Rich tropical fruits aroma, with citrus notes (mandarin), spices (ginger) and flowers. Intense hop flavors, big tropical goodness, high bitterness, decent sweet malts and faint alcohol notes. Med-full body, good carbonation, long bitter finish, a bit too heavy but yummy. Cool.

NYC Trip Beer #8. Nothing like following your very first AleSmith IPA with your first Sculpin. Between the two, I far preferred the Sculpin. Pours a pale orange with a lovely white head head. Beautiful Citrus scents and flavor. Well carbonated with a crisp hop finish. Bought some to bring back to the A. Bottle - Guilty Goose - New York, NY

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Golden orange in color. Tons of citrus and hops on the nose. Great balance between sweet fruit flavors - apricot, lemon - and hoppy bitterness. Fizzy feel on the tongue. You cannot do better for a wide release DIPA.

Bomber thanks to GorditoABD! Thanks Chris! Pours a beautiful golden honey color, with a solid two finger head. Smells like Hops on top of hops. Pure pine resin and grapefruit rind. Taste is almost chewy its so wonderful of grapefruit. Finish is bitter and citrusy..Good stuff. If California falls off into the ocean, perhaps we can at least save San Diego.
