San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tumbler on 11.03.14. A: Orange. Maybe honey malt. It smells sweet, but its not a very strong smelling IPA. A: 1/2 finger head with a moderate pour. Hazy pale orange body. T: Orange, tropical fruit, and honey malt dominate. Pine, lemon, and biscuity malt are subtle. P: Crisp with bubbles on the back end. O: This is in the San Diego style, obviously, but its a well-balanced IPA. It has a subtle piney bite on the back end. Overall, its not very strong, but it might make a good entry IPA. Stone IPA is similar but seems to have a stronger kick to it as its more hop forward.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2009 Style; glass: IPA; tulip 22 fl oz x 7% ABV = 154 / 60 = 2.56 beers * 150 C = 384 calories (est.) Purchased at: Craft Beer Outlet, Phila, PA for $11.99 Aroma: nice, calming, beach, field, grassy, salty, citrus. Visuals: brand focused packaging, a bright engaged yellow, brilliantly clear, bright white tight bubbled head, sticky lace. Taste: expertly balanced, honey, citrus, rind, peppers. Palate: Bright, crisp, and layered, drying, increasingly bitter long finish. Overall: Fantastic. In my top 3 IPAs, certainly. A favorite. From a firkin. Oh boy. This knocked me over at the Bella Vista Grand reopening in October in Philadelphia. Those 2 oz samples were like little tiny bricks sealing me in to a personal twiddly state. It was amazing, memorable, and significant. After about the third small sample, the world was a blur. Use with caution, and enjoy. If you can get it, suckas.

Poured from a can. Hazy gold with a very thick, long-lasting head. Very strong citrusy aroma. Bitter, but in a good way. Definitely would have again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Had this on tap. Really solid IPA. Dry and piney. Decent bitterness. Not much malt, which I like. I could a lot of this brew. As far as IPA goes this one fits the bill for me.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours golden orange with a finger of fluffy white head. Upfront aroma of mango, grapefruit and caramel biscuitiness. Fuckin barnstormer. Flavours are textbook - loads of tropical hop flavours, mango and citrus backed with a cracking caramel malt backbone, get a bitta that in ya. Nice present but not overbearing bitterness. Brb getting a carton.

From a can. Pours a light amber-orange and makes a nice white head. Smells of toffee and light caramel. Tastes of grapefruit, citrus, and hops. Reminds me of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
