San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

This IPA pours golden orange with a bit of haze and minimal head. Aroma is phenomenal with loads of hoppy citrus, apricot, and mango. Taste is moderately sweet, sticky, with a long lasting bitter aftertaste. Medium body and crisp finish.

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2009 22 oz. bottle shared with DuffmanSW while brewing a Centennial single-hop IPA. Pours a clear bronze/copper with low carbonation and a small off-white head with decent lacing. Light bready malt aroma with an abundance of citrusy/pine hops typical of the west coast style. Initial flavor mimics the aroma, light maltiness with lingering bitter/dry hop finish. Light to medium palate with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. From beginning to end, it’s really all about the hops.

Draught at Farmer Market, LA. Pours clear orange golden with a white head. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits, pinedød grassy. Flavour is verbal and dry. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation. Finish is resinous and dry.

Pours a honey-orange color, one finger off-white head. Moderate carbonation running up the glass. Aromas of big citrus (grapefruit/orange) with subtle notes of pine, sweet malt and tropical fruitiness. Taste has a great balance of the bitter citrus notes and a light bodied sweetness then moving to some more sweet notes of papaya, kiwi....before harmonizing with a clean, moderate bitterness in the finish. Very well rounded beer.

From tap at Keg Cowboy. Pours deep orange in color with a small white head that lingers. Aroma is all citrus with grapefruit, passion fruit and bread. Taste follows with a lite body and smooth end. Not too bitter. Also this is a fruity IPA not Piney.

Tap. Pours a dull gold with medium head that lingers. Great hop aroma. Initial taste is strong citrus hops. Lots of pine and grapefruit. Medium bitterness in the aftertaste. Perhaps a bit too much bitterness for my tastes as it warmed up, but excellent overall.

Poured from tap into Chimay glass a nice amber with white head and lace. Aroma was grapefruit and a bit floral. Taste to me was a better balance between the hops and malt. It was grapefruit not doubt but not a bomb. Med body. Really liked this one, a winner for sure.

A: Pours a little on the light side but otherwise amber. Head dissipates pretty rapidly leaving some good lacing. S: Aroma is very fruity. Appricot... orange are the big players. Some hops but lighter. T: Subtle fruit notes. A little bit of fruit. A little bit of malt. The bitterness seems to overwhelm the other notes and fade quickly leaving a dull bitterness. P: Carbonation is a little aggressive. Decent flavor development. I was so excited to try this beer! Great ratings.... picture of a sculpin (my wife totally takes care of them at the aquarium!) IPA, Ballast Point!!! But this beer was pretty disappointing. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. A little uncontrolled... doesn’t bring anything special to the table. The Big Eye IPA and the Calico Amber were way way better. I have a growler of this bad boy in the fridge so I will see if it gets better. Bottled w/ drink by date at 7/11/2013
