San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Clear brassy pour. Massive rocky white head with tons of chunky lacing. Apricot and resin in the nose with just a wisp of pale malt. Medium mouthfeel. Just enough carbonation to carry the nose, but not so much it gets fizzy. Peach, apricot, honeydew rind, and whole lemon in the middle, followed by a touch of honey, bready malt, and lingering pine. Delicious.

12 oz bottle poured at souplantation in San Diego. Smells like citrus, drank from the bottle so unsure of appearance. Great taste; citrusy hops. Very refreshing. Great beer.

Drack denna l fr kall frsta gngen och var inte alls imponerad. Nu drack jag den ngot varmare och fick en smakupplevelse i gengld. Hrlig doft, kompakta balanserade smaker och en ptaglig beska som sitter kvar lnge. Mkt bra l kort sagt.

12oz bottle from Brewmasters in Wilson. Golden hue, normal clarity with mostly diminishing white fizzy head. Virtually no lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, citrus & lemon. Heavy bitter grapefruit hop up front with more of an average bitter orange-citrus finish. Crisp on the palate. I thought this was a solid IPA, my favorite beer from Ballast Point so far.

Aroma is dominated by hops, grapefruit and spruce. Just a bit of bready malt. Light copper or amber color with a fairly substantial white to off-white head. Clear. Taste is quite dry and quite bitter. Palate is interesting, fairly light body, really crisp and dry. Carbonation average. Finish is grapefruit and carbonation. Overall I like the crispness and dry bitterness. Definitely a hop bomb though, not much malt balance.

Golden/light amber colour with a creamy head. Aroma of hops and fruits. Some pine, grass and citrus together with a hint of mango. Taste of hops, toffee, orange and a hint of mango. Characteristic hop bitterness but still with a fresh mouth feel.

Pours a beautiful gold with a thick white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, oranges, HOPS!!! Hops and more hops on the palat, but somehow not overpowering; very easy to drink. Nice dry bitter finish. This is without a doubt one of the best balanced super-hoppy IPAs I have ever had the pleasure to try; glad I bought more than one bomber!

12 FL OZ ($19 assortment 12pack) I picked up this pack as it had 3 different types of their beer and on their own can be expensive. This is a very good IPA, has lots of character but none of the palate coating nastiness of many other IPAs. has a good amount going on which may not be so apparent to the newbie but is much appreciated for the beer lover. chug it or sip it; either way its a great beer. Totally lives up to the hype and will be buying again.

Beautiful orange copper with a pillowy white head. Gorgeous lacing throughout. I just have to sit and admire this baby. Bouqet of grapefruit and melon. Pungent hop flavor with citrus and the perfet malt balance. Lingering sweetness with long lasting bitterness. Dry finish with some alcohol warmth, I cant put it down, it is soo good.
