San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz. bottle, pours hazy golden orange with a white head. Piney hop aroma, with lots of different fruits: peach, apricot, mango and lemon are all noticeable. Flavour is a barrage of fruit flavours, with the peach and apricot jumping out in front, and lemon toward the finish. And of course, a massive burst of hops that kick towards the middle and finish off the palate. Creamy, buttery mouthful. Wonderful brew.

Light gold colour. Massive aroma - explosive orange and melon. Superbright. Bitter body, so much it’s sweet with lots of melon, fresh fruits. Not the most balanced but what a great aroma.

Tap at Ravintola Kirjakauppa. Hazy orange color, small white head. Aroma is bready and grapefruity. Medium-bodied. Grapefruity and a bit grainy flavor. Maybe not the freshiest keg.

On tap. A lightly hazy dark golden beer with a reddish hue. A finger thick white head leaves curtains. The aroma is certainly peachy, with pine cones and a little malty touch. Some sweetness in the flavor, well balanced by the bitterness. The bitterness wins... peaches and pine cones too. Full body, soft carbonation, slightly warming. Bitter and fruity finish. Quite lovely this one. 130808

Bottle. Pours orange amber with white head. Nose/taste of mango, pineapple, peach pit, citrus, lemon and caramel malt. Dry citrus finish with hints of resin/pine. Body on the lighter side of medium. Hops are slightly perfumy. Easy drinking.

A: A clear pale golden color with a fluffy white head and nice lacing. S: I could have just sat there and smelled this thing all day long. Amazing hop character, particularly citrus (grapefruit), mango, and pineapple. T: Like the nose indicates, quite a bit of fruit in this one. Especially the grapefruit and pineapple. An excellent piney bitterness on the finish. The malt is very absent, and that is very much appreciated. M: Moderately carbonated, which works quite well for this beer. Medium body. D: One of the easiest drinking and most well rounded IPAs I’ve had...ever. An absolutely amazing beer.

Bottle @ GBBF, 2011. Thanks to Caesar. Pours cloudy yellow with a small creamy white head. Pine, grape and citrus. Dry and hoppy bitter flavor with lots of citrus. Smooth and medium bodied.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2016 355ml bottle (Kitty’s, Helsinki) (5:3:5:3:10=2.6)
Woh, cabbage aroma?!?! Onion. Stinky dishcloth. Simple palate. Stick, forced carbonation. One-dimensional resiny bitterness. No depth, sweet malts, flavourless bitterness. Everything that is wrong about modern IPA. No balance, no drinkability, no integration of the flavours. If another ticker had appeared, I would immediately have offered my glass. I can finish this, but I’d rather give it away. Give me something tasty instead, I’d rather the spring onions in my salad.

Sweet, slightly stinky hop aroma. Ditto taste. Really not not much better than before. Harsh palate.

Bottle [from trade with mista] @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear orange color, full sized off-white head that lasts for a long time. Aroma is malts, loads of hops, very fruity with grapefruit amd mandarin. Taste malts, hops, fruit hops, fruity, grapefruit, bitter. Lingering fruit and bitter hops in the aftertaste. Incredibly balanced flavor between the fruit hops and bitter hops. Medium to full body, perfect carbonation. I thought maybe this beer is hyped, but it is simply good. Very good, incredibly balanced. Lovely IPA.
