San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle - Heavy fruits and some nice sweetness. Clear orange with minimal head. Grapefruit and other tropical fruits, great bitterness that lingers and cuts through almost anything. A great strong IPA, beware palette.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Sort of a bright copper color with a decent off-white head. Mixed aromas of grapefruit and tropical fruits. Near medium body with medium carbonation. Flavor is sort of grapefruit mango over lightly roasted caramel. Bit of a bitter hop burn in the finish. Astringent too. This is a really super drink.

On tap at Money Plays. Pours a clear amber with thick frothy white head sticky lacing. The aroma is floral hops and pine. Medium mouthfeel with a strong hop bite and bitter finish. Easy to drink, really enjoyed this one. An impressive IPA from Ballast Point.

Scopey (15010) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 3, 2011
On tap at Rattle N Hum. It pours golden yellow with a thick foamy off-white head. The nose is grass, hay, nettle, apricot, peach, raspberry, pear and red apple. The taste is more subtle than anticipated: hay, grass, well hidden alcohol, lemon sherbet, red apple and resin, with some hop bite at the end. A really enjoyable IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2012 Re-rate 2/22/12: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks Dagan. Almost clear golden with medium white head. Hoppy aroma with citrus and some tropical fruits notes. Bitter flavor with decent fruity hops. Medium-bodied. Maybe slightly past its prime, but still a good IPA. 7/4/7/3/14=3.5

Bottle sample at a tasting. Huge thanks Ambar for bringing me this bottle from the States! Slightly hazy golden with a white head. Incredible aroma of citrus and tons of fresh tropical fruits. Flavor has a bit of sweetness at first with some malt and then continues bitter and hoppy with tropical fruits, pine needles, and a bit of resin. Medium-bodied. Really good. 9/3/7/4/15=3.8
