San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

A pale blonde IPA with a thick white head. In aroma, nice citrussy hops with light pinhey notes, floral, pure californian. In mouth, a smooth IPA with light biscuit malts, floral hopping, well balanced and smooth. On tap at Cajun Café, Jan. 5 2011.

Aroma is heavy malt (grain, meal, cereal), heavy hop (perfume, pine, spruce, citrus), average yeast (sweat) with notes of pear, apple, and peach. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Bottle. Orange blonde color. Oily hops, grapefruit and pineapple in the aroma and flavor. Blackcurrant. Thinnish. Long earthy oily hopbitter finish. Well balanced, but not a hop monster.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2010 Sample from a bottle courtesy of JaBier at the Day Before Labor Day party. This brew is a hazy orange-gold color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily. Thin rings of lacing. Great aroma of ripe peaches, citrusy hops and pine. Medium body with a moderately bitter piney hops character along with flavors of citrus and malt. The finish is hoppy with a lingering citrusy aftertaste. Good IPA all around.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2013 650ml bottle. No date. I hope it is fresh. It pours a lightish gold with a frothy white head. There is some decent lacing as it recedes. The smell is nicely hopped. It is mostly pineapple and generic like smarties or something. The flavor is really nice. It tastes like it gets way too much hype though. It has a clear cut bitterness which is great but it is the support act that isn’t as great as I was hoping. There is some tropical fruit backing, but I want more. Overall though it is a solid IPA. New bottle best by 9/13, Crustal clear appearance. Aroma is citrus, pineapple, caramel, bready malt, some spice. Flavor is round, fruity, citrus, nice pine, very good bready malt base. Like drinking a pilsener if it were an ipa. A finely crafted brew that took me a few times to really appreciate.

Fruity taste of ripe orange, apricot, and pumpkin. Bittersweet citrus peels to the ending. Medium plus bodied. Good drinking (Tromsø 19.02.2014).
