San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Gold with a white head. Nose is citrusy fresh hops that are very dank. Very nice on the palate with a very interesting flavor of citrus hops that bites quite well.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2010 650 mL from Southbay. HOLY $%@$!.Pours a clear, light amber with a two-finger, creamy, off-white head. Good retention and lacing. Okay lacing. Aroma is huge fresh grapefruit, tangerine, peaches and cream ice cream, huge butterscotch, caramel. Taste is fresh, citrusy, wet hops with butterscotch and a massive bitterness permeating throughout. Buttery, creamy on the palate that leaves a sort of oily mouthfeel. Wow. 9/4/8/5/17=4.3

After multiple samples of this beer on cask, tap, bomber all from Ballast Point itself, I really need to lower this rating. The IPA is awesome- that is a fact. The huge is massively rocky, leaves massive lace. But its superlative nose of mango peel, peaches, apricots is let down by a mostly voiding body, little butterscotch, very little creamy mouthfeel. More dry, seltzery, bitter. Still excellent.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2012 Wow. Now this is an IPA. Huge Pinapple, mango and citrus nose. In the mouth it is full yet so smooth. Lots of citrus and pine in the mouth, coating the tongue. Strong, but not overly aggressive. I could imagine this as the perfect gateway beer in to NWIPAs. However once youve had this little would stand up in comparison. The Green flash WCIPA would be the only IPA that could compare to this. World class and then some. RERATE more a citrus bomb now, but still very enjoyable, though not as amazing as the tropical fruit edition.

Brewed in the USA !!! On tap at the Brass Rail. Pours straw in color with a super foamy white head that will dissipate in time. Aroma of hops, malts, citrus and fruits. The taste has fruit flavors like oranges, mango, grapefruit and peaches with some hops and citrus notes. The mouthfeel is thin to medium in body with a nice crisp dry hoppy bite at the finish. Wow, this IPA was really good stuff !!! I could drink this all night long. :)

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2014 Golden amber pour into the tulip glass with a large white head. Aroma of grapefruit, tropical fruits, resin, some caramel malts, mouthwatering in fact. Would love to see this in unfiltered form. Taste follows the aroma well, perhaps a touch over-carbonated however, could be slightly smoother to enjoy the complex hops here. Finish is typical IPA, bitter but the caramel malt backbone helps smooth it out some.

Draught at McLaughlins. Cloudy medium golden color, with a trace of amber. Lovely. Huge fruit aroma, citrusy hops, melon, lychee, and other tropical fruits, though mostly grapefruit, or, to be more precise, Buntan, which is a Japanese grapefruit-like citrus. Aroma is close to that of the inner peels. Sweet, fruity flavora bit candyish, actually, with buntan, zest, melon and pineapple. Very much like a sorbet or a fruit salad that has had grapefruit juice poured all over it. A slightly comical beerin a good way. One of the most fun beers I have had in a long while. Balance is not perfect, but hey!

22oz bottle from CBX. Pours a not so cloudy light amber color with inch thick head., Very citrusy aroma of grapefruit and possibly some apricot as well. Taste is of grapefruit, but not too much of it. This is rather light and refreshing beer, but still brings the bitter pop at the end that I appreciate from an IPA. Slight hint of the sip looms in your mouth for a bit. One of the better IPAs Ive had so far.
