San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

KyotoLefty (10264) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 19, 2010
Draught at McLaughlin’s. Cloudy medium golden color, with a trace of amber. Lovely. Huge fruit aroma, citrusy hops, melon, lychee, and other tropical fruits, though mostly grapefruit, or, to be more precise, Buntan, which is a Japanese grapefruit-like citrus. Aroma is close to that of the inner peels. Sweet, fruity flavor—a bit candyish, actually, with buntan, zest, melon and pineapple. Very much like a sorbet or a fruit salad that has had grapefruit juice poured all over it. A slightly comical beer—in a good way. One of the most fun beers I have had in a long while. Balance is not perfect, but hey!

22oz bottle from CBX. Pours a not so cloudy light amber color with inch thick head., Very citrusy aroma of grapefruit and possibly some apricot as well. Taste is of grapefruit, but not too much of it. This is rather light and refreshing beer, but still brings the bitter pop at the end that I appreciate from an IPA. Slight hint of the sip looms in your mouth for a bit. One of the better IPAs I’ve had so far.

22 oz. bottle into a .5L glass. Light copper color with an inch+ clean white head. Steady carbonation. Healthy amount of foam clinging to the glass. Light pine scent followed by potent, fresh hops and subtle peach/lemon aroma. Crisp, slightly dry hops on the taste with a clean finish. Quite up there among the best IPAs I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy - would love to get this straight from the tap at the brewery (I’ll put that on my "to do" list).

Thanks to Tom for this awesome bottle. Light orange brown pour. Huge citrus, mango, peach and pine hop aroma. So tropical and awesome. Taste is bright and crisp malt with a light citrus hop bitterness. Amazing light bitterness. Delicious.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy, more towards golden than orange, with a 1 finger white crown that shows some retention and lacing. This looks like my kind of IPA! Smell: Not the most pungent IPA, but still a fairly impressive array of grapefruit citrus notes and floral hop notes over a pale malt. Taste: Grapefruit and a slight pine note coupled with grass. Nice amount of hop bitterness without much astringency! Mouthfeel: I’m not sure on this one. It’s a touch chewy, seems a touch undercarbonated, but is fairly spot on. Drinkability: Fantastic for a brew with so much hop goodness. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-18-2009

I drank Alpha King for the first time earlier today, and this beer is eerily similar, but to me it is a decent bit inferior in quality. It starts with a rather boring appearance, a golden color verging slightly into orange territory but with a head that fades quickly and leaves little or no lacing. The nose is of similar quality to AK, with mango absolutely jumping out and a slight note of pineapple juice acidity. The taste is good, but not as pleasant as that of Alpha King, being less varied in its fruity flavors and also shockingly bitter. I appreciate some bitterness in my beers; Pliny the Elder is probably my favorite beer for drinking in a session, but Sculpin is a bit less graceful than that beer and takes a hit because of it. The palate is nice, with a medium body and decent malt smoothness mostly on the front end. Overall, Sculpin is a really, really good beer. A 4.1 makes this very clear. But I do wonder if I would have like this beer a lot more with just a slightly lower IBU level.

Into a wine glass, poured a nice golden color with a thin lace of head. Different citrus hints off the nose. Overall a smooth and well balanced IPA.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2011 On tap at Capone’s, consumed as Roy Halladay was pitching his perfect game on the bar TV. But I was more interested in the IPAs than the IPs and Hs and Ks. Excellent aroma on this very West Coast IPA. Dry, herbal, and astringent, with lots of pine. Sharp, with lime and tropical fruit notes, and the flavor gets richer as it warms a bit. Sculpin is a remarkably good beer, in what has been an excellent week for rating IPAs. Rerated upwards in 2011.

On tap at Capone’s on 5/29/2010. Pale yellow, mostly transparent with a bit of head. Aroma has lots of clean pinecone hops, very similar to PTE, but a bit less dry. Flavor has lots of pinecone hops, good bitterness, some flowery and herbal character. A faint vegetal astringency and a touch of sweetness are all that separate it from PTE. Good carbonation and mouthfeel, hoppy bitterness finishes it nicely.

On tap at smokin joes in pittsburgh. Pine and floral hop aroma. Nice tart grapefruit taste. Somehow really well balanced for a brew that tastes like flowers. Light caramel malts. Smooth finish. Great.
