San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Draft, Liars Club. Straw yellow with a small but sturdy head. Just a whole bunch of grapefruit and zest, mango and pineapple. Taste is dry and tart with a stinging hop bitterness. The rating can’t be complete without noting the piney resin.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2011 5 oz taster at the new Scripps Ranch Brewery: Light amber/golden color with a moderate white head. Aroma is citrus and lightly piny. Flavor starts lightly fruity sweet then come the hops; grapefruit, a little pine and a subtle dry orange rind finish. Balance is definitely on the bitter side, but well done. Medium bodied and smooth with a grapefruit after burp. Also got to meet Jack White (owner/brewer) and Yuseff Cherney (head brewer) who may have sold Tom Nickel his first home brew kit. 10/21/11: My go-to-beer at Point Loma Seafoods.

On tap at Mountain Sun’s durring their Hop Havrest Month. This is a great IPA with all of the charachteristics I like. Great citrus aroma, ton’s of hop flavor and a nice bitter finish that keeps the taste lingering. Ballast Point has really improved their beers over the years.

Crazy delicious. I like my big IPA’s to pucker me up and say "Damn, man!". This does that to me. Like freshly squeezed hops and hemp, this is a fresh tasting, big time IPA. One of my favorites from Ballast Point.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2008 This stuff is awesome. A pretty under the radar IPA in SD from what I can see. It comes and goes - when it’s here, try and snatch a pint of it. Very sharp and dry finish, great pine taste, very crisp. Leaves you wanting the next sip. A must try - usually always is at the brewery to taste

Fresh from the brewery. It’s a heavy looking brass color with a stiff layer of white head. The initial aroma is pure citrus and hop but a more detailed scent of grapefruit and fresh pine will shine through. The flavor is a strong delivery of citrus and piney hops with just the lightest dabble of grainy malt. This ipa sure does pack a punch which makes me wonder what the alcohol percent is. Also, I didn’t think this Sculpin IPA was very far off from Ballast Point’s el Dorado double IPA. I think the logo of this sculpin ipa was real cool too.

On tap @ the Stone World Bistro. Pours a clear deep gold with thin bright white head. The aroma is a hit of grapefruit citrus hops mixed with a backbone of sweet maltiness. I love the way these flavors come together as noted in the first sip. The taste is crisp with semi bitter grapefruit hops and more like orange juice. The malts take a back seat to the hops but make a notable appearance bringing the bitter grapefruit citrus hoppiness closer to more like sweet orange juice. Very nice IPA.

Tap @ O’Brien’s. Pours clear orange-gold with a spongey white head. Great floral hoppy aroma with lemon and oranges. Clean, bold hop taste throughout. Good amount of grapefruit with tangerine, pine without resiny stickiness, and maybe a little pepper. Bittersweet malt in the finish without being overbearing. It has the hop bite and taste of an Imperial, but the body of a regualr IPA. Excellent.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2009 22oz bottle acquired in trade with WeeHeavySD (thanks!). Poured a medium to deeper and clear golden color with an larger sized off white head. Aromas of pine, citrus (grapefruits and lemons), and grassy. Nice and hoppy aroma. Tastes of citrus, light caramel, pine, some melons, and a little fruity. Nicely bitter with a light sweetness. 8 3 8 4 16 Retasted and I’m upping the numbers on this one.

My 100th IPA rating! WooHoo! 22 oz bottle, via trade. Pours a clear dark straw gold body with a nice big foamy white head that left lots of intricate lacing. Wow! The nose on this is just killer. So bright and fresh smelling, the hops are bursting with fruit aromas of tangerine, apricots, and peach. Minimal malt in the nose, but that’s just fine by me. It just smells so simple and yet so complex at the same time. The flavor is really interesting as well, there’s so much hoppiness, but the bitterness is really minimal, making it incredibly easy to drink. So much mango and dried apricot on the finish, yet the low bitterness makes it fade fairly quickly that you want another sip right away. The malt is so subtle and secondary that it really showcases the hops well. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied with a bit of doughy stickiness on the finish. The carbonation really brings out the hops as well, firm and fizzy, but it’s really fine. Overall, this was one of the best IPAs that I’ve had in a long time! I’m glad that I tried this so fresh though, cause I think that this will lose alot of it’s beauty pretty quick. Fantastic stuff!
