San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Yes--I know people dont like that Ballast Point was acquired by Constellation and yes, my palate has evolved in the years since this beauty was first released, having tasted countless other IPAs. To hell with that---Sculpin is still THE great San Diego IPA and became so by hitting that illusive sweet spot of not being too strong and bitter to turn off the non hop heads and enough citrus and fruitiness to appeal to women and novices. If you were to try one San Diego IPA as your benchmark for my home towns best known style--it would be Sculpin, bar none

Pour: Golden orange amber. Head is a creamy white with beautiful lacing. It looks like your grandmothers doily. Bouquet: Clementine citrus, raw sugar, piney, and floral hops. The Sip: Toasted malt notes start off and fade into the hops. These herbal and floral hops spring up through the malt notes and burst citrus onto the scene. There is a nice hop bitterness which cleanses the palate of the malt makes Sculpin very well balance. Sculpin reminds me of apricot jam, orange-marmalade, light creamy malts. Toasted bread. Deep resin. Mouth-Feel: Small, sharp carbonation. Medium body. Tart pucker on finish. Overall: Exceptional. An intensely complex IPA. Flavor notes are deeply layered, and very well balanced. You could drink this with almost anything and it would steal the show, I would suggest light foods to pair with this, lightly fried fish, grilled chicken, or sauteed shrimp.

Very consistent, right now Im drinking this on a nightly basis. This is pretty much IPA perfection, and is pretty much everything I want in an IPA. Decidedly better in bottle than on tap. Unfortunately I cant find it in bottle anywhere other than Julios Liquors. Will stock up soon for the summer before going back home, thinking ~20 bottles, ~$200, hope that will be enough.

Clear amber; medium frothy white head; appetizing appearance. Incredible aroma, lots of grapefruit, passionfruit. Easy to gulp down; medium bitterness, white grapefruit, slightly powdery texture. On the dry side but carrying a lot of flavor. This hits you in the same way that peeling a grapefruit releases its aromatics. Exceptional IPA.

translucent gold with a thick dense head. medium-full body with high carbonation.

aroma: bright citrusy apricot slight-pine hops, sweet pale malt with a rather helles-like character.

taste: grassy piney hop bitterness, a definite woody note, pale malt, mild minerality, and a touch of yeastiness.

This is a near perfect beer. Smell and taste the fruit. Apricot holds true to the description. Great tasting IPA but dont be deceived. This is not your typical IPA. This one is a rarity.
