San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Aroma is off the charts - hello super pine and resin bomb! Nice golden in color with a little white head. Flavor subsists of pine, citrus and melons with the Ballast Point dryness at the swallow. This is easily one ofthe freshest IPAs I have ever had and my favorite beer of 2008.

One of the best. Taste isnt quite as citrusy sweet as the nose implies but still an all time favorite. This one is an easy drinker and the bottle disappears quickly. Cheers to the Charleston Beer Exchange for getting this gem in.

UPDATED: MAR 2, 2012 Bottle. 25.4 oz. Split with Sean. Pours hazy orange-gold with with a thick, frothy white head. Aroma of hop resin, orange, pineapple, honey, Granny Smith apple, vanilla, caramel, and sweet malts. Fuller bodied; perfectly balanced with a juicy, tart, smooth mouthfeel. Slow-burning, crisp, carbonated finish. Outstandingly executed, outrageously delicious, incredibly satisfying Imperial IPA. By far one of the best brews I have ever tasted.

This reminds me of two of my other all-time favorite IPAs with the great parts of each blended together; Port Wipeout and Nugget Nectar. It has a great floral, fresh hop flavor that sticks to your palate. Unmatched freshness and plenty of citric and somewhat sweet hop flavors make up the profile but there are many subtleties. Why dont I live in California?

Poured a hazy orange with a thick 3 finger head. Nice lacing. Aroma is incredible, citrus and floral hops. Light to medium body. Light to medium carbonation. Good mix of grapefruit, mango and pine. Very drinkable. This just might be my favorite IPA yet.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2013 Holy cow, this might be my new favorite beer. Smooth and delicious with a juicy grapefruit aroma. Oozes hops, and delicious IPA flavor. Incredible. VERY smooth drinking for such a big beer. If this were more readily available, Id drink it all the time. Near perfection in my book. Ive never had anything better.

Bottle; shared many thanks with Angelo. WOW. Massive hoppy nose, hold out so well in the fridge, great lacing, slightly hazy coppy pale appearance, lovely yeast clean yeast strain, strong tropical fruits and grapefruit, really big and bold and aggressive on the tongue, lovely US bittereness, hops are just bang on gorgeous, I enjoyed this more than Pilny, baby this rocks. Loads of candy, great dry fruity finish, succulant down the throat and damn damn drinkable. One hell of an insane top big bold US ipa which should be setting titanic waves accross the industry. Stunning. Thanks mate. Legend. Damn I need to cool down.

Aroma: This is a colorful beer with instantly recognizable aromas. Nice bouquet. Fuzzy winter peach up front. Bright Citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and mango is hushed by slight floral and pine hops. Piney hops are very aromatic and green. Appearance: Creamy cake icing head with big bubbles nice lacing and retention. Brilliant golden to light copper color. Clear and nice natural carbonation. Taste: Nice balance between sweet roasted caramel malts and delicate citric and pine hops. Not overly bitter. Alcohol is hidden behind a nice complex array of flavors. Hops have a slightly noble bite. Palate: Creamy. Balanced. An easy drinking IPA. Medium bite of bitterness. Nicely refreshing. Overall: Refreshing and balanced. Worth the few extra bucks this thing costs. A hop aroma like this is hard to come by. It also helps that this beer reminds me of a sandy beach on a warm summer day.

Deliciously balanced IPA. Floral hops with just a hint of citrus. Crisp, clean flavors. Gorgeous dark golden color and the smell of fresh hops. One of my absolute favorites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
