San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Appearance: Very bubbly, with a bright orange hue. Looks very refreshing. Smell: Citrusy and tropical. Very appealing. Taste: Hops were surprisingly sharp up front, given the aroma, but not in an offensive way. Just more punch to this beer than the smell would imply. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Drinkability: Very tasty and drinkable. I love the art and the tone it sets with the beer. A tough IPA with big hops.

Pour: Golden orange amber. Head is a creamy white with beautiful lacing. It looks like your grandmothers doily. Bouquet: Clementine citrus, raw sugar, piney, and floral hops. The Sip: Toasted malt notes start off and fade into the hops. These herbal and floral hops spring up through the malt notes and burst citrus onto the scene. There is a nice hop bitterness which cleanses the palate of the malt makes Sculpin very well balance. Sculpin reminds me of apricot jam, orange-marmalade, light creamy malts. Toasted bread. Deep resin. Mouth-Feel: Small, sharp carbonation. Medium body. Tart pucker on finish. Overall: Exceptional. An intensely complex IPA. Flavor notes are deeply layered, and very well balanced. You could drink this with almost anything and it would steal the show, I would suggest light foods to pair with this, lightly fried fish, grilled chicken, or sauteed shrimp.

I have been anticipating a serving of Sculpin for some time. Restrained anticipation. Bought in a six pack, first one out. I drained the bottle in a tall beer glass. It gives a swell medium gold liquid and a charged white head that laces quite well. Lifted for a scent it is a moderate citrus and grass nose with a hint of sweetness. The taste is moderately hoppy, lemon, and pineapple. Pleasantly bitter at the end, it lingers on the tongue. Perhaps the best rounded IPA I have had.

Bottle. Shared at Beertemple, Amsterdam. Thanks! Pours golden amber with almost no head. Fresh fruity aroma, lots of citrus, peach, light sweet malts. Taste is over moderate bitter, resiny bitter aftertaste. Very nice.

Zapach ziołowo-żywiczny. W smaku też ziołowo-żywicznie. Goryczka bardzo fajne zaznaczona, a zupełnie niezalegająca. Fajne.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 21A). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch SC1447 (BBF unknown). AROMA: medium hop aroma with some oxidation notes already taking place. notes of mango, slight peach and faint dried grass. medium-low almost neutral malt background with a slight oxidation note (caramelized). APPEARANCE: deep gold/orange-ish color and clear. medium white head with good retention. TASTE: medium-low hop notes (resin/pine), followed by a slight caramelized medium-low malt background. medium-high bitterness with a dry and bitter finish that endures. PALATE: medium-light body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: an american IPA showing oxidation notes and that should be nice fresher. The US breweries should pay more attention to the shipping conditions because the Europeans also want to drink your great beer. ;)

0,355l bottle. Pours orange with small white head. Piney with a bit of citrus. Quite average bitterness for an IPA. Bit disappointed to be honest.

10/20 very disappointed. It's ok but a bit middle of the road, not much freshness, zero bitterness, not much depth of flavour. It's drinkable, not unpleasant but was expecting more for a 100 club beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

355ml bottle bought at HK Brewcraft in Central.

Looks: Clear golden orange colour; One-quarter finger head with soapy white foam which fades in 15 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with active carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant Ale malt, with apricots, strong mangoes, peaches, candied fruits, grapefruit pulps, floral nectar, sugar, pine, resins, spices, biscuits, lemon peel and grass. Very subtle!

Taste: Close to medium sweet Ale malt, with grapefruits, light candied fruits, floral, fructose, pine, fair resins, strong herbs, spices, dry biscuits, lime, strong bitter hops and strong fresh grass.

Body: Mid to full body; Thick, creamy and oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Full Ale maltyness in a thick background, rich and very smooth. Strong but subtle hops with moderate grapefruits and touches of candied fruits, very grassy herbs, pine and light ooze. Flowery with fair fructose sweetness. Biscuity with lime to round. Very balanced and nice!

Hoppiness: Apricots, mangoes, peaches, candied fruits, grapefruits, floral nectar, pine, resins, spices, lemon peel and grass in nose. Citrus, light candied fruits, floral, pine, ooze, strong herbs, spices, lime, and fresh grass in taste; Bitterness is quite strong for a lasting, mid to high astringent bitter sweet malty finish.

After taste: Fairly dry. Citrusy, herbal and nice strong bitter to mouth.

Comments:This one is strongly hopped for sure, but what is so good about it is the subtely in both aroma and taste - the yellow and citrus fruityness is juicy, with with well-noted pine and resins but never over the top. Very herbal grassy but the bitterness is mild and, breezy and refreshing. Its sweetness is fruity not sugary. I can go on, but you get the picture: this is a very well-balanced west coast IPA. A masterpiece!
