Decent tan head with sticky lacing down the sides of the glass. Aroma is thick and massive malt, oat, a touch of roast/char, and earthy hops. Taste is coffee, chocolate, noticeable bitter hops, a raisin/malty sweetness toward the back, and alcohol. I’ve had this in bottles and via tap multiple times and it usually comes across as a bit rough. I believe this particular bottle is the most recent batch and it seems a bit smoother but I think it could use a few years in the bottle to even out. I’ll have to remember to grab one and stash it away.

Aroma is full and rich from roasted malts, licorice and dark chocolates. Taste is medium sweet, but yet a slight spicey roasty cloak. Yes, like many creatures in deep, blackened waters, Sea Monster can creep up on you. The most impressive aspect of this 10% ABV beer is how smooth it is and how well the alcohol is hidden. Ballast Point’s Stouts tend to be fairly traditional in how bitter and roasty they are, but Sea Monster prefers the surprise attack. While you do get some finishing bitterness from high-alpha American hops, the majority of the flavor profile consists of dark chocolate and coffee with just a bit of cream. UPDATED: FEB 27, 2017 Shared bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours black with almost no head. Aroma of dark bread, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted notes, alcohol. Tastes very bitter. Medium bodied, smooth mouth feel.
