Sea Monster Imperial Stout is a new version of an old favorite. This hearty stout is black as the abyss and clocks in at a whopping 10% ABV, a real monster. The flavors of roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are complamented by a velvety smoothness from the addition of un-malted barley and oats. Colombus and Amarillo hops help to balance out the huge malt character of this flavor bomb. Be careful the alcohol is well hidden and will sneak up on you if you dont watch out. Like most scary monsters, it can be a little intimidating, but have no fear.

Poured from tap into tullip glass. Pours a nice jet black color with a tan light head. Aroma is nice and roasted but kind of light overall with some coffee notes. Flavor is initially bitter with roasted coffee notes and a hint of chocolate. There doesnt seem to be much on the backend. Maybe mostly alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and carbonation is average. Overall a delicious stout.

Draft. A nice, slower down stout. Like a chocolate or oatmeal, but with a decided west-coast hopping. Smooth throughout. caramel finish.

Yes, like many creatures in deep, blackened waters, Sea Monster can creep up on you. The most impressive aspect of this 10% ABV beer is how smooth it is and how well the alcohol is hidden. Ballast Points Stouts tend to be fairly traditional in how bitter and roasty they are, but Sea Monster prefers the surprise attack. While you do get some finishing bitterness from high-alpha American hops, the majority of the flavor profile consists of dark chocolate and coffee with just a bit of cream. Not as complex as some of the other big Stouts, but marvelously balanced and pretty tasty.

Bottle/Fest. A- Cocoa, slightly roasty, watery. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, beige head. T- Tobacco, char, roasty, bitter, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- Honestly, I expected better. Especially after having all the Victory at Sea beers. This seemed pretty traditional as far as Imperial Stouts go. Okay, but just not exciting. The taste was at least much more diverse than the aroma.

Semi sweet aroma, milk chocolate, coffee bitterness, some oatmeal, some booze. Jet black with a light brown head. Bitter chocolate and coffee flavor. Aftertaste is bitter as well. This is hoppy for an imperial stout; not particularly well balanced. Palate is too thin for my tastes. This is okay but I was expecting better from Ballast Point.
