UPDATED: AUG 14, 2008 (On tap) I was disappointed by this one; it seemed to be lacking complexity. The dominant flavour of this beer is sour...the sourness easily overpowers any bitterness or sweetness present. One can taste the malt, but it is not particularly strong or dominant. No strong hop aroma is evident. The texture of this brew is a bit thin, especially relative to the powerful flavor. There is a rich coarseness, which I like. The carbonation, however, seems more characteristic of a fountain soda than a beer, and seems mis-matched with this brew. Overall, strange, and not as good as I had hoped for. Also, I’ve tried this beer in two separate locations, and it had a fairly different character both times, although my review adequately describes both batches. Could there be a problem with consistency too? At any rate, I would not recommend this one highly.

Sampled at O’Briens - RBSG ’08. Cloudy, muddy dark brown with a small, fading head. Caramel, mocha, wood and hint of tart/sourness in the nose. Like the aroma, the flavor starts with notes of mocha, caramel, wood, light tobacco and ends with a bit of saltiness and medium tartness/sour acidity - which works well. Medium to light bodied (perhaps the bugs dried this up a bit) with soft carbonation. Well-done.

On tap at Toronado. Pours black as night, creamy small head, and very little lacing. Nose of coffee, chocolate, roasted notes, floral hops and caramel. Lots of roasted malts in the flavor, with coffee and thick chocolate. Some toffee, too. Alcohol is subdued but definitely makes an impact. Full-bodied, tangy mouthfeel, creamy and very good.

Deep attractive pour with a thin tan head. The nose is complex and rich with chocolate, coffee, whisky and oak. The flavor goes a lot more sour and alcohol, losing most of the original Sea Monster. Dry finish.

On tap at Toronado San Diego during RBSG ’08. Pours with a dark brown to black body topped by a thin head with little lacing. It’s slightly sweet yet tart with a slight malty, coffee note and a little oakiness. Full bodied and slightly dry.

(SAMPLE FROM THE BREWER @ BALLAST POINT.)black body with not much head.slightly funky flavor and aroma.with some roasted malt falling in behind.im not sure if this is infected or if the funk is on purpose.

On cask @ Hamiltons. Very interesting beer. Light nose of bourbon mixed with cherries. Flavor is strangely fruity, tart and somewhat odd. The bourbon is fairly nice, but there is a sweet cigar like flavor in there that is also a little distracting. Pretty good, but not quite up to what I would have hoped for.

Pours black with a medium, yet well retained light brown head. Smells of light roast, mild bourbon, dark malts, andcream. The flavor was a little more tart than I was expecting, with alot of dark fruits and malts mixed in. The whiskey isnt overpowering, in fact its quite subtle. Really just didnt stand out for me. Wasnt bad, but was too unusual, and didnt have any of its characters blend well. Still drinkable though.

From a Growler Craig from BP Brought to RBSG today. Really nice version of this beer. Pours black with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is full of bourbon and sweet notes. Taste is sweet with lots of bourbon and a viscous mouth feel. Its been too long since I’ve had Sea Monster to do a direct comparison. This is nice.

Draft at O’Brien’s. Black, small off white head. Bittersweet oatmeal stout with some mild bourbon barrel, subtle coffee, and a bit of a twang- barrel oxidation or unclean lines?Medium/full body, smooth.
