Tap at the brewery’s 10th anniversary celebration. Love the nitro display for this pour. Aroma of roasty malt, coffee and a hint of bourbon. Flavor follows nose with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Very nice. enginaaron (73) - San Diego, California, USA - JUL 29, 2008
I really like this. Sea Monster is a bit bland for my taste on it’s own, but when aged in the JD whiskey barrels, this stout really comes around. Great thick, creaminess with a moderate sour taste from the JD. I’m a big fan. Dogbrick (13145) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUL 31, 2008
Sample at the Linda Vista location. This beer pours brownish-black with a thin and bubbly light brown head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon and chocolate, along with some malt in the background. Rich body with flavors of whiskey and malt primarily, and notes of chocolate and hops supporting. The finish is oaky and malty with a lingering alcohol aftertaste. Pretty good overall. danielcurtis81 (1519) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 22, 2009
Draft at Downtown Johnny Browns. Pours black with a light tan head with a soft webbing. Nose is whiskey, and light vanilla. Nice whiskey flavors without the alcohol burn. Sweet tone and lactose. Really smooth. Lacks some of the stout flavors but still really good. boFNjackson (4201) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 15, 2009
Poured from a growler at the HotD dock sale... Poured black with a moderate, tannish head. Noticeable whiskey and boozy warmth with roasted notes of coffee and malts on the nose. Nice hearty, boozy brew with roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla and whiskey flavors. Oaky, wood-like hints there before the finish.

On tap at Pizza Port’s Barrel Blast. Pours with a black body and minimal head. Aroma is huge with brown sugar and molasses, bourbon and vanilla with notes of coffee and chocolate in the background. Flavors are heavy on the vanilla and chocolate with a woody finish. Some how manages to finish somewhat dry compared to some other big barrel aged RISs. Tasty. Appearance: Pours black with no head, no edges and no swirls.Mora2000 (6158) - McKinney, Texas, USA - APR 13, 2013
Aroma: Bourbon, roast and dark chocolate.
Taste: Dry roasty malt, minerals, tannins, bourbon, finishes with very bitter dark chocolate.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, creamy carbonation.
Overall: Delicious. I’d like to see this get bottled one day.
On tap at the Moth. Black with a tan head. The aroma is full of whiskey and chocolate. The flavor is similar. I get some charred oak notes at first, but those are quickly replaced by some big chocolate and whiskey notes. There is also a little bit of anise like I get in the regular version of this beer. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. WeeHeavySD (3387) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 2, 2008
From a Growler Craig from BP Brought to RBSG today. Really nice version of this beer. Pours black with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is full of bourbon and sweet notes. Taste is sweet with lots of bourbon and a viscous mouth feel. Its been too long since I’ve had Sea Monster to do a direct comparison. This is nice. On tap at Toronado San Diego during RBSG ’08. Pours with a dark brown to black body topped by a thin head with little lacing. It’s slightly sweet yet tart with a slight malty, coffee note and a little oakiness. Full bodied and slightly dry.
