COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

On tap at Lompoc. Pours a purple color with a small white head. A big woody sour fruit nose. The flavor is light sweet berries, oak, sourness, sawdust. A pretty mellow beer, but quite good. Very sour at times but not acidic.

Pour on tap at Northern Lights Rare Beer Fest, dark reddish purple pour with pink head, aroma brought notes of big blackberry, some biscuit, vanilla into a bit of raspberry, slight lemony tartness, hints of oak. Taste was a mix of funk, earth, oak into some blackberry, cherry notes with a hint of vanilla, finishing slightly tart, slightly dry.

March 28, 2015 - taster pour at the Rare Beer Fest in St. Paul. Purple pour with pink head. Not bad for the style, but the appearance was the best part for me.

Draught. Pours a mostly clear reddish brown color with a smallish pink head on there. Nose has dark berries and a lot of sour elements coming through. Taste is quite tart with blackberries being very salient and a hint of sweetness on the back end.

Tap at Grind in Glenwood. Pours clear, deep red with pink tinged white head. Aroma is mild but a bit of berry, jam. Taste is light sour, medium carbonation, really mild flavor, not a ton going on, kinda reminds me of jello. Overall, okay.,
