COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the Sour Style’s.

Sample at Bobs Bar during the Taste of the Coast with Maine Beer Company event on 05/17/2017. Clear dark burgundy-red color with a medium off-white head that recedes quickly to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of tart berry, yeast and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of blackberry, herbal yeast and doughy malt. The finish is sweet-tart berries. Decent overall.

On tap @ Rattle N Hum. This one’s a crystal clear blood/beet red one with a small scattered pinkish head. Smells really good and sour. Soft raspberries, blackberries, sour blackcurrants and some red currants. Really fruity and nice this aroma. Tastes really good and fruity also. It’s soft thin oily on the texture and just above average on the carbonation. Really refreshing without being too sour this. Loaded with fruity blueberries, red currants and blackberries. Mmhhh.. A lovely tartness and a hefty Berry presence. Nice! 11.06.2015

On tap at Ballast Point - Scripps Ranch, pours a cloudy pinkish amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out deep tart blackberry pie, light wild character and jam. Flavour is very jammy, with tart blackberry jam, some fruit pie and a bone dry pithy quality. Wonderfully constructed, with a lingering jammy character. Really nice.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a muddy purple with small off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is berry, wheat, dough. Thin body, similar flavors to nose, light tart finish, good.

Decent Berlinner Weisse, thankfully on the dry side, accentuating the blackberry tartness without dipping into jelly sweetness. Finishes sour but mellow, yet the berries cling to the palate for a good long while.

Pours ruby red with a small beige head. Aroma is earthy, blackberry and cereal. Taste is tart and lightly sweet. Light bodied, thin with light carbonation.
