COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Points original Master Brewer Peter AHearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, its a great bridge beer into the Sour Styles.

Keg at the Little Italy taproom, 12/11/14. Clear claret with no head. Nose is tangy berries, sweet notes with a little sourness, tartened blackberries. Taste comprises tangy blackberry, straw, subtle acidity, red berry sours. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a gentle puckering effect. Decent enough Linner, would have preferred it tuned up a little more in a sharper more acidic sense.

A: The pour is a dark crimson looking color with a huge pink tinted head that just wont go away. S: The nose offers up some blackberry, tannic fruit skins, some mild notes of grass, and a bit of oak. T: The flavor is somewhat blunt. Certainly astringent and somewhat bitter, almost, with lots of fruit skin and seed flavor. A bit of blackberry and lemon juice tartness. M: The body is light to medium with a somewhat soft, but plentiful, carbonation. D: Of the sour Ballast Point beers, this is my least favorite. The fruit flavor is not really there and overall, its somewhat abrasive and harsh.

Tap at the Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours reddish black (or purple?) with a slight pinkish head. Aroma of tart/sour berry - but some sweet aroma too. Near med body. Flavor is more tart than sour. Very berry. Goes quite astringent eventually. Tasty. Adventure: Mixed some 50/50 with the Berryessa Whippersnapper. Chocolate and blackberry = good!

The taste is sour blackberry, blackcurrant, Granny Smith apple, pear, red apple, raspberry and wood, with pear in the finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Nice fruity tartness. Not particularly complex, but utterly drinkable. Delicious.
