COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Points original Master Brewer Peter AHearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, its a great bridge beer into the Sour Styles.

On tap at Ballast Point - Scripps Ranch, pours a cloudy pinkish amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out deep tart blackberry pie, light wild character and jam. Flavour is very jammy, with tart blackberry jam, some fruit pie and a bone dry pithy quality. Wonderfully constructed, with a lingering jammy character. Really nice.

Decent Berlinner Weisse, thankfully on the dry side, accentuating the blackberry tartness without dipping into jelly sweetness. Finishes sour but mellow, yet the berries cling to the palate for a good long while.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2017 Tap. Light grain and light bread for the malt, lemon for the hops, nothing discernable for the yeast, with dark berries in the background. Head is small fizzy/frothy, lavender, with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is purple. Flavor starts lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and faintly bitter. Palate is light, watery with a lively carbonation and a lightly dry finish. Excellent Berliner Weie thats full of flavors and is super easy drinking.
