Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Bomber poured hazy red copper with a thick off-white head and nice lacing. Aromas of citrus, dark fruit, raisens, and malt. Flavor is bitter and boozy.

Bottle. Aroma of candied pineapple, pine, flowers and grass. Tastes mildly sweet and moderately bitter. Big flowers and tropical fruit, some caramel and toast, pine needle finish. Dry finish. Solid.

On tap at crappy bar. Dark red color. Caramel nose. Strong strong red flavors. Dry finish. Definitely not for me. Very cough medicine like. Not a big fan.

Aroma is tropical fruit, pine, juicy and very nice. Appearance is red, pink to off white head. Taste is malt, pine, tropical fruit, juicy, bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium body with a crisp carbonation and lingering aftertaste. Overall, another fine offering from Ballast Point.

@ Brewdog in Leeds. Tasty imperial red, but a little too bitter. Fair and likable.

Pour on tap at HopCat, clear dark red pour with slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, orange, grass, pine, some slight spice, touch of old hop notes. Taste was a mix of booze, bitter pine, some slight fruit, spice, caramel, finishing fairly bitter.

Tap. Pours a dark amber with a small tan head. The bitterness in the aroma hits straight away with pine and malts. Flavour is very bitter with some orange and pine hops. Not a bad beer but just wasnt really for me.

Keg at brewdog bar, Sheffield. Dark red with no head. Aroma is resiny rich. Taste is bitter and syrupy, really lingers on the tongue. Mouthfeel is strange, maybe a bit too cold, quite full bodied and oily. OK stuff.

Pours deep red/orange. Nice dark fruit flavours similar to a strong Belgium beer, not too much dry after taste that i can feel. I drink too many IPAs though..

On Draught
Pours a deep orange color with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The atom aid big on toffee and sweetness, its got licorice, its got caramel... its got a generally muddled but very prevalent hop character.

The flavor picks up where the aroma left off, big and sweet with lots of alcohol spiciness. Its big on bitterness, its big on caramel, its big on those two things clashing.... The hop character isnt all together bad sort of spicy sort of fruit forward. Licorice, toffee, malt, malt, malt, hops, hops, hops.
This does not restore my faith in Imperial Red Ale, and I dont know that there is a beer that ever could... not my thing at all. The whole category just seems to be about an onslaught of FLAVORS! and throwing substance to the wind.
That said, if this is the sort of thing you like, Ballast Point did a fine job of presenting this style for what it is worth.
