4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: APR 4, 2015 Aroma: wood, vanilla at the forefront, fading into coffee and roasted malts. Also present are earth and ash, while caramel tempts and waters the mouth. There’s a prickling alcohol presence, but it blends in with the other notes. The mouthfeel is sublime: perfect combination of a medium-to-viscous body and smooth carbonation. It manages to be as distant from "watery" or "overcarbonated" as it is from "syrupy." On the tongue, it is sweet without being cloying and moderately bitter; it leaves an aftertaste of burnt wood, malts, a motherload of coffee, and just a hint of vanilla. I really wanted it to be a little more vanilla-forward than it is, but then again that’s asking for perfection. It’s a fantastic beer as it is, and I’m glad it finally got to Texas. It’ll be a regular in my fridge for sure.
UPDATED: JUL 21, 2017 This one is the best Ballast Point beer to me. Always way beyond my expectation. meccahh69lol (222) - New Haven, Connecticut, USA - JUL 20, 2017
This one is way more impressive than I remember it being. Smells of coconut, chocolate, and coffee. Appearance is thick black with a medium thin head. It tastes of rich mocha, vanilla, and oak. Very smooth, velvety, and easy drinking for a 10% abv imperial bomb. Good for a hot ass sweltering day of blaring Neurosis records and making homemade garlic chili cheese fries.

Bottle shared thanks to sjorgogo. Pours black with a small tan head. Roasty coffee, with a slight sweet fruit presence, tons of vanilla, hops still present as well, chocolaty. Vanilla sweetness and roasty coffee bitterness. Over medium body, low carbonation. sjogro (4160) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - JUL 13, 2017

Really dark brown color with creamy tan head. Aroma has dark chocolate, cacao and a light fruity note. Taste has sweet chocolate and coffee with some slightly artificial vanilla notes. Bitter cacao on the finish and continues on the aftertaste. Medium plus body, quite smooth on the palate. Quite nice overall, good balance between sweet coffee and bitter cacao.
