Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

It’s a bit odd that California Kolsch (or Yellowtail Pale Ale, as it was previously called), is Ballast Point’s flagship beer. The brewery has become strongly associated with its hoppy beers, so a light-bodied, clean German-style Lager seems like an unusual place to start. Still, it clearly worked out, didn’t it? California Kolsch pours a little darker than the usual golden-pale color. Yeast aromas and subtle herbal hops. Tastes like bread and finishes with grassy hop bitterness. Very smooth, easy-going feel. A nice one for the summertime.

Bottle. A- Malty, sweet grains, A- Amber color, clear liquid, white head. T- Bubble gum, lemon zest, caramel, malty. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Kolsch, Pale Ale, whatever it is, it’s a special beer. Not necessarily amazing, but very drinkable. A bit of bubble gum yeast in the flavor and lots of caramel malts. Not bad at all.

Pours a clear orange Amber with a frothy white head. Very active carbonation. Aroma of lemon zest and straw. The taste is light. The slight bit of tartness dissipates quickly and is replaced by a subtle yet spicy bitterness that lingers. Very creamy mouthfeel. Light and refreshing with a crisp finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle (thanks martjoobolut). Clear golden color. Small size, bubbly beige head, disappears. Malty, grainy, sourish, faint fruity in aroma. Sweet, malty, citrus in taste. Lemonish citrusy hops in aftertaste. Quite bland and boring. Why is it under style kolsch?

355ml bottle - thanks martjoobolut
Sweet fruity aroma, light pale malts. Pale sweet malts in the taste too. Bitter finish. Has just the fruitiness of a kolsch, nothing more, and that fruitiness is way more than a kolsch should be. This is in no way a kolsch, and he commercial description basically says that. What wanker admin is in charge of this beer’s classification?

Bottle shared by Mart. Pale yellow beer, white head. Nose is grain, malt, grass. Flavor is slightly floury, lagerish, grains, malt. Finishes with grass and grainy malt, lingering grainy sourness. Quaffable, but forgettable.

Pint on draft at a seafood restaurant in San Diego. Light unclear orange in the glass, small foamy white head. More malt and grassy on the nose. Taste starts like a malty Pilsener, grassy and some hop bitterness. Less fruity. Later hints of marzipan in the aftertaste. Okay.
