COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
THE BALMAIN PILSNER WAS LAUNCHED IN NOVEMBER 2010 FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THE BALMAIN PALE ALE. IT’S A BREW CREATED IN HONOUR OF THE GREAT OLD BALMAIN BREWERY OF THE 1980’S, SO FONDLY REMEMBERED BY MANY FOR ITS LAGER AND BOCK AT THE TIME! THE RE-LAUNCHED PILSNER IS IN THE STYLE OF A NEW WORLD BOHEMIAN PILSNER, WITH MOTUEKA HOPS, AS WELL AS NZ SAAZ AND TRADITIONAL CZECH SAAZ, WHICH PRODUCE LOVELY HERBACEOUS FRUIT DRIVEN NOTES IN THE AROMA. IT ALSO HAS THREE DIFFERENT MALTS: PALE PILSNER MALT; CARAMALT FOR COMPLEXITY AND COLOUR; AND CARAPILS FOR BISCUIT MALTINESS. THE BALMAIN PILSNER IS WELL BALANCED WITH A ROUNDED CLEAN CRISP FINISH, AND IS THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT TO SEAFOOD OR ON ITS OWN AS AN APERITIF!

330ml bottle. Pokal glass. Really disliked. sweet and corn syrup macro beer characteristics.

Clear and light yellow with minimal white froth. Aroma of some malt, very mild however. Taste is mostly sweet malts, but disappears quickly and becomes a little bland. Some bitterness. Quite carbonated and smooth to drink. Not too bad but could be more exciting.

Faint aroma of sweet malts. Flavour: malt body, mild and nice earthy hops coming through. The mouth feel is round. It’s nice, but no bitterness characteristic of good or great lagers (in my view). Also, there is a sweetness in flavour that reminds of some Australian macro lagers on which I am not that keen.

330ml into glass. Spicy hop/malty nose. Golden amber beer with thin white head. A few bubbles. Slick mouthfeel, sweet taste. Nice crisp finish of creamy hops. Could drink a few of these in a session.

Pyobon (1418) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - JAN 6, 2015
(Bottle) Hazy pale golden with short-lived thin loose white head. Not very appealing aroma of grain, grass and cardboard hints. Light body, good carbonation. Taste starts with a pleasant soft light sweetness, goes through a rather bland mid-palate and finishes with some rather harsh bitterness. An unusual take on a pilsner, but not really to my taste.

Maris (1532) - Canberra, AUSTRALIA - DEC 11, 2014
From a 330ml bottle on 11/12/2014. Pours a light clear golden with a small head. The nose features some prominent grassy malt and saaz hops. Taste wise, it’s a bit confusing, with earthy, metallic and chemical flavours coming over the top of some mild bready and grassy malt, with some moderate hops following. Light bodied with lively carbonation. A little harsh and difficult to enjoy.

sm89walt (2070) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - NOV 16, 2014
330ml bottle. A clear, bright golden orange colour that poured with a fine, loose and fizzy white head. Zesty, fresh lemon and orange characters with subtly sweet, nutty pale malts and a pithy, grassy hop bite to finish. Light to medium body, medium carbonation and all the while clean, crisp and refreshingly textured with a tangy, modestly bitter finish of good length.

motelpogo (7704) - Plzen, CZECH REPUBLIC - JUL 20, 2014
bottled, from the upstairs bar at the bank hotel in newtown. pale yellow; light grassy aroma, hay stew, minimal bitterness; very little going on

mattyhennessy (376) - Highton, AUSTRALIA - JUN 24, 2014
Pours golden with a white head. Looks appealing. Mild citrus aroma with minimal hop character. Sweet malt backbone, light bodied with medium carbonation. Not much hop flavour. A little citrus sweetness with some rind to round it out. Decent but not memorable

Tap. Strong honey flavour which is not the worst, but still has a bit of that skunky lager taste/smell that appeals to the masses. Not the worst
