COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A traditional dark beer based on old recipes. "Baltika" brews this beer with the best dark and light malts with the addition of superior hop types and a special strain of yeast. Crystal-clear water and the secret touch of "Baltika"s brewers make this a beer of unsurpassable quality.
The ingredients are water, caramel malt and burnt roasted malt, maltose syrup and hops. 17

Pours black/dark brown with a decent sized tan head that leaves little lacing. Smells and tastes of molasses, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and dark fruit. Medium-heavy body with a slightly bitter hop bite at the end. Overall a pretty good beer.

Bottle. Opaque deep brown with brownish head. The aroma has notes of prune, dried fruits, dark chocolate, some roastiness and hint of cherry. Sweetish and bitterish flavor, spicy with notes of dark chocolate, some roastiness, prune and licorice. Medium-bodied.

Gekauft in einem russischen Supermarkt in Berlin. Ganz dunkles Braun, kein Schaum. Aroma nach Malz, Bitterschokolade, slich. Sprudelnder Antrunk, bittere Schokolade am Anfang, dann eher Kaffee. Bitterer werdend, etwas Nuss. Letztendlich mild und weich

2015 BJCP Category: 9C Baltic Porter

AROMA: Dark malt presence with dark fruit notes (plum, raisins, currants). Slight toffee and dark chocolate. Some sherry notes from oxidation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black but actually deep ruby red. Clear. Moderate tan soapy head evaporates. 2/3

FLAVOR: Dark malt throughout, but not particularly sweet nor roasty/bitter. Some dark fruit flavors, especially of black grape. Minor toffee flavor in the aftertaste. Faint trace of spicy hops. Slight sherry component. Good palette considering its age. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body with med-low CO2. Feels a bit thin and watery. Smooth. 7% alcohol is fairly tame. Finishes too clean. 2/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: For a year-old bottle this has held up well. Palette is complex but mild and body has diminished. I can see why BJCP considers it a classic example of the style. 7/10

TOTAL SCORE: 33/50

NOTE: I am a rank-pending BJCP judge. I am reviewing commercial beer to BJCP specs to hone my judging skills.

[Leżak 2 lata] W aromacie karmel, migdały, trochę paloności i lekki sos sojowy. Bez szału, ale nie jest źle. Barwa ciemnorubinowa, ładna piana. W smaku dość słodko, jest karmel, ale też landrynki, strona palona słabsza, ale także zaznaczona. Goryczka niska. Piwo jest dość ciężkie w smaku, a w odczuciu w ustach z kolei nieco wodniste. Nie zachwyca, ale jest poprawne.

From a bottle into a Ayinger glass. Pours black with head and lace. Aroma of roasty malts, milk chocolate. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of milk chocolate, amber malts, light grains, caramel, sugar. Overall flavorful, rather easy drinking with minimal bad tastes...just a little sweeter than standard for a Baltic porter.

Pretty excited here to sink my tastebuds into my first legitimate Russian beer. There is quite a difference compared here to the styles Im used to here on the west coast. The appearance is dark brown with some ruby highlights around the glass. The head is tan and creamy, only sustainable for a few minutes. In the aroma, caramel malt prevails first, a slight sorghum quality, some plum, black licorice, cassis, and light floral hops. On the taste, there is a slick oily mouthfeel from the malt syrups used in the recipe. The caramel malt drives forward with chocolate and roasted barley in the backseat. The finish is dry and a little funky.

Całkiem całkiem porter. Aromat delikatny, palony, kawowy.
