The most famous E. European strong lager, and indeed for a reason. Finally got to have the fresher version in its hometown and it’s great stuff--light bodied but full-flavored, lively carbonation, nice/smooth/non-overwhelming alcohol burn. A privilege to rate it as my 1000th! FoamHead (30) - - JAN 1, 2017
The reason why this beer gets so many bad reviews is that it does not age well in the bottle or the can. If you travel to Russia, especially Saint Petersburg where it is brewed, and have a fresh bottle, it is an excellent beer. Yes, it is high in alcohol, but it doesn’t taste boozy. It is well balanced with good malt and yeast ratios and just the right amount of hops. If you are looking at inventory that’s old, just skip it. This beer is indeed terrible after it has sat on a shelf for months.
