UPDATED: JUN 13, 2004 Bottled. Hmm, its been a while since I had a malt liquor; think back to winter of 89, I was hangin wit my homez, splitting a 40 of St. Ides at the White Castle on 115th... But this is a different time and place, specifically, Russia. Has the same cloying sweetness of a Baltika 3. Yes, I can already feel the alcohol headache coming on. I guess its just a shade below an inoffensive beer. Well, I was warned about the beer in Russia, wasnt I?
Re-Rated, canned. Okay, trying it again, the alcohol warmth is kind of welcoming. There's still a big sugary taste, but for some reason it doesn't bother me as much.

Aroma suave pero agradable. Apariencia plida amarillenta con fina capa de espuma blanca que desaparece a los minutos despus de servirla. Sabor medio cuerpo. Bebida en vaso a partir de botella de 500 ml.

The reason why this beer gets so many bad reviews is that it does not age well in the bottle or the can. If you travel to Russia, especially Saint Petersburg where it is brewed, and have a fresh bottle, it is an excellent beer. Yes, it is high in alcohol, but it doesnt taste boozy. It is well balanced with good malt and yeast ratios and just the right amount of hops. If you are looking at inventory thats old, just skip it. This beer is indeed terrible after it has sat on a shelf for months.

Bottle from WB Stores, West Bromwich. Echoes of Russians drinking bubble bath; not a conducive image for happy Xmas drinking. Initially this tastes a little limp. Luckily, the strong streak of sickly anti-freeze booze arrives and saves the day. Average for the genre.

Been a while since I had this one, but memorable enough. It tastes like it was transferred to the bottle from a can that was already partially dissolved from contact with the Baltika.

Fairly smooth Euro malt liquor/strong beer. Alcohol predominant but good effervescence without being overcarbed or totally undrinkable.

Bought from local liquor store in a 500ml bottle. Appearance: poors pale golden with a thin, white head that quickly melting away. Nose: boozy, some malts and sweets. Taste: quite sweet and malty. Not so great hop. Notice the alcohol immidiatly. Tastes a bit like a cheap lager with a shot of vodka in it. Nice try..

From a bottle labeled Baltika Grade 9 Extra Lager... 8.0% abv. Im betting this is a fairly fresh batch. Pours clear gold with head and lace. Aroma of light malts, honey, grains. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of light malts, amber malt, slight cereal, sugar, minerals, light hops. Overall flavorful, easy drinking, a tad sweet but nevertheless tasty and decent for the style of strong pale lager.
