COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Medvejie Lake, south of Sitka, is tough as far as lakes go. The steep cliffsides surrounding the glacial lake give it a frequent wind tunnel effect, and its only accessible by foot or float plane. Derived from the Russian word for bear, Medvejie is pronounced meh-duh-VEE-gee locally (but probably not in Russia). Our stout is also strong like the bear. Fueled by flaked oats, roasted barley and chocolate malts, it also packs some heat with 7.25% ABV.

Malts: two row, crystal, brown, chocolate, black, flaked oats, roasted barley
Hops: nugget, cascade, willamete

Rich deep brown coloured body with a thickish, two to three centimetre tall frothy brown head - looking similar to a nicely poured Guinness. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, alcohol, milk, cream, grain, molasses and some more malt. Medium to Full-bodied; Very rich, caramely and chocolatey flavour with a ton of coffee flavours and bitterness and even more rich molasses, buckwheat, cherry and earthy malt notes - very rich and strong throughout the taste. Aftertaste shows a very rich deep chocolate flavour with a lot of coffee bitterness and hardly any sweetness, more of a vanilla and roasted flavour that dominates. Overall, a nice stout that borders on depth of a strong stout, especially with the thick body and complexity, but the alcohol by volume seems very nice and appropriate - almost too low. Definitely worth picking up if you can find this and dont mind paying the ridiculously high price of ~10USD! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from La Bodega in Anchorage, Alaska on 04-October-2014 for US$9,95 sampled at home in Washington on 31-August-2014.

22. Pours black with a very brief burnt tan head. Big sweet nose, kind of fumey, smells like a bit of ethanol snuck in on this one. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Roasty dark bittersweet chocolate mid palate, again with the treacly sweet ethanol notes. Mild sweet finish.

Pours with an amazing amount of tan head in the ale glass. Thick and frothy, and takes a while to calm down. Tons of lace on the side with each pour. Aroma of malt, cocoa and a bit of coffee. Tastes sweet with a somewhat bitter finish. Surprisingly light bodied, with moderate carbonation. An enjoyable brew!

Dark black with a dark tan head and medium retention. Malt forward with slight roast. A little bit of chocolate. Does not taste like 7% and is more Sessionable.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate light brown head on it. Nose is roasty and a little bitter with some noticeable dryness; I can also get some grains in there, decidedly oats. Taste is roasty and creamy up front, and a little on the dry end. However, the finish is slightly sweet. Not bad.

UPDATED: SEP 18, 2015 Bottle. Head is initially large, creamy/frothy, rocky, brown, fully lasting. Body is black. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (coffee, roasted grain, black bread, bitter chocolate). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Well, crud, I have not been able to get repeat enjoyment out of this one, certainly not of the 4+ level like my first experience last year in Seattle. Everything else Ive tried from BI up here in Alaska has been disappointing, so either quality has dropped or theyre very inconsistent. Rather watery and tart, like the other stuff from them that Ive sampled on this trip. At least the aroma is still nice.

Bottleshare from dan. Pours black, lots of tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate. Taste is light, slightly bitter, light body. More so than I expected. Bitter chocolate comes through in aftertaste.

From the 651 ml. bottle. That extra milliliter must make all the difference! Absolutely gorgeous dark brown, no, make that a black pour, with a foamy tan head that settles back slowly and laces along the way. Aroma of milk chocolate, dark malts, and an earthy hop note. Thought not an oatmeal stout I do pick up some oat grain. Medium to bold body. The chocolate and malty character kicks in at first in the taste but then there is this explosive but still mild bitterness roaring up on the backside. Very nice all around.

The aroma is roasty, chocolate. The flavor is chocolate, roast, wood, cream. Light vanila Medium, slightly thick in body, not thick for a stout. The finish is roasty, bitter, light vanilla. Good overall. D
