Draft at the pub. A nicely poured pint with a thin tan head, fair retention and just a little bit of spotty lace left behind. An almost black colored brew, though some brown edging is noticed. Nose of light roast, lightly dusty, caramel malts and coffe as well. Medium body, creamy on the palate, lightly oily. Pleasent roast flavors, a hint of cocoa and maybe some notes of vanilla as well, chocolatey flavors along with the roast, coffe and some berry notesl. Lightly sweet and roasty finish. Decent. jercraigs (10635) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 11, 2008
2008-06-11. Black body with a modest khaki head that fades. (3+) Very interesting aroma, very dry roast, extra dry cocoa, and a light touch of smoky burnt vegetations. Dry roasty flavour acquires a strong ashtray character to is as it goes on, dry roasty bitterness. I am really not digging this one. Average to thin palate. Not for me. Nice roasty aroma with a little chocolate/barnyard haze. Dark with a creamy head. Only slightly nutty sweet -- I wouldn’t categorize this as a sweet stout, it’s almost a porter. Medium body, moderate roasted finish that gives way to cocoa. Goes a little flat and a little watery. Enjoyable, but not very distinct. Thanks to the W family for hauling this back from MA. Black body with a medium tan head. Very roasted beer. Very toasted bread, light roasted coffee beans, hint of vanilla, faint dark chocolate. Some grassy and citric hops. Short mild-medium bitterness. Overall rather dry especially for a Sweet Stout. Full bodied by a lively carbonation. Nothing original but a highly enjoyable stout. Was simply called “Stout” at the pub. I assume it’s the same as this “Black Bear Stout” ratebeer entry. They probably just stopped making a beer for the black bear. It’s a bad idea to make a beer for bears anyway, they eat the customers when they get the munchies. OldGrowth (3474) - the Containment Area, North Carolina, USA - OCT 24, 2005

Truly excellent sweet stout, with a very powerful milk chocolate aroma, medium sugar in the flavor, vanilla hints swirling amongst the chocolate, rather dry finish like most of the brewery's stuff, just a bit too much astringency or it would be GREAT. Still, pretty top-notch.
