This exceptionally smooth stout is produced from the original recipe that was shipped to the Russian port of St. Petersburg for the Czar’s Imperial Court. The smooth mellowness derives from the long maturation time in cask before being bottled in very limited numbers.

Very black. Tan head. Aroma of musty vampire closet, pencils, lead, and old furniture. Soft and silky smooth palate. Whoa, strange flavors! Tastes very old fashioned. Acai berry chocolate. Cashew carob. Chalk. Chinese plum candy. India ink. Peculiar, odd, and lots of fun!

Cask - White Cliffs Festival 2010, Dover. Pours a thick, opaque black with no head. Sticks heavily to the glass’ sides. Full of prunes and plum on the nose with some soy sauce. Really vinuous on the tongue with chewy prune flavours and a tarry, smokey malt bitterness. Creamy and dense on the palate with a lingering heat in the throat. Thick and almost impenetrable at 11am but cracking stuff.

Cask at the White Horse Old Ale Festival, 27th Nov 09. Very dark brown in colour. Sour, slightly milky aroma. Rich malty taste and a smooth finish. I wasn’t really taken with this (but then again, I’d just been floored by the Baladin)

Svesse (8683) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - DEC 10, 2009
(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 28 Nov 2009) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, black coffee and dark fruit. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dark chocolate, black coffee, prunes, raisins and a balanced coffee bitterness in a long finish. Full body, smooth and rounded mouthfeel with alcohol well hidden. Deceptively drinkable. Lovely stout!
Earlier Rating: 9/3/2009 Total Score: 3.8
