The term "pilsener" is widely used to describe a number of beers available on the market. According to German criteria for a true pilsener, however, the vast majority of them would be unrecognizable as such. By this definition, a pilsener is a lager beer with a light golden color (5-8 color units by European Brewers’ Convention standards), a specific gravity in the 11.5-12.5% Plato range, and a hops content of at least 28 EBUs (European Bitter Units). Most so-called domestic "pilseners" fall far short in these categories; Bayern Pilsener easily meets all three (6 color units, 12% Plato, 34 EBUs). What does all this technical jargon mean? It means you have purchased one of the very few authenic pilseners brewed in America. Reward yourself by enjoying this beer the way it was meant to be served: pour your cold Bayern Pilsener, in two or three slow steps, into the center of your glass (a fluted or "tulip" glass works best). The thick creamy head (the German term for this is "crown") and you have just created the mark of a classic Bavarian pilsener. It is functional, too - the crown holds finely distributed natural carbonation inside the glass and acts as a shelter for this beer’s distintive, hoppy flavor.

Appearance: Pours a crystalline, yellow body with a wispy, white head. Smell: Flowery pils malt aroma with a hint of honeyed grain. Taste: Sour, grainy pils malt taste with a honeyish sweetness. Some floral hints. Very mild bitterness. Empty, watery finish. Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: Some pilseners can be very good indeed, this, however, is lacking at best.

Bottle thanks to kyzr: Pours a transparent golden with a thin, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of lightly sweet pale grainy malt and some saaz hops. Body starts lightly sweet and nicely balanced with a bitter hoppy presence before a crisp, clean finish. A pretty good pilsener.

shp555 (2024) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAY 10, 2008
Pours a pale yellow color with a white head. Aroma is grainy, spoiled cream, and a hint of some hops. Flavor is grainy, spoiled cream, and a bitter peppery finish.

ATLBeerDog (280) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAY 10, 2008
Pours extremely light yellow in color with almost no head, no lacing and not much carbonation. Smells of floral hops, and fruits. Tastes is severely lacking any flavor at all. Not worth boiling hotdogs in! If you did the resulting oily liquid would have a ton more flavor. This is not good at all.

unclemattie (4406) - Georgia, USA - MAY 10, 2008
12oz bottle. Pours clear yellow. Aroma of a grassy hop and a hint of Elmer’s Glue. Flavor is of the bitterness of a corrogated cardboard box. Very nice pale malt flavor. The bitterness seems to be overpowering the rest of the beer.

DuffMan (10930) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 8, 2008
Straw yellow, moderate white head with early lace. Sweet pale malt, lightly hopped (herbal, grassy), with a mild bitter finish. Maybe this would be better on tap.

OldMrCrow (2447) - Seattle, Washington, USA - APR 28, 2008
Tap at the Mont Lake Ale House.

Pours a very light gold with a modest head. Grassy, slightly sour aroma. Bready malts yield to a mild hop bitterness on the close. Perfectly refreshing even if unexceptional.

Fizzy yellow gold head leaves quickly. Nice bready aroma. Sweet bread, floral and grassy bittering hops in the finish. Not complex, but pleasant and crisp. A nice pils.
