I may not always listen to Rock n Roll, but when I do, I have a Nelson IPA.

On my first (but not last) visit to Chuck;s Hop Shop, abit overwhelmed by the choices & feeling a little hurried, I grabbed this one largely because of the name Zappa, only to later found out not Frank. i smell resin, perfume, caramel & salt. Slightly hazy orange-amber with thin white head. Flavor of grapefruit rind, mint, carmel. Thin in the mouth. Bitter, tongue-drying finish.

Thanks to Joey for the bottle. Pours a murky light amber. Taste is smooth malty with a light hop bitterness, notes of stone fruit and citrus. Caramel notes and citrus, stone fruit notes in aroma. certainly keeps you away from the yellow snow.

Bottle:   Nice head and lacing, but other than that its too light.   Has the bitterness of a PNW Pale Ale, and the hops are somewhat muted.   Slight powdery sweetness.   Otherwise fairly clean.   Feels more like an IPA than a Double IPA, just not big enough.   Pithy finish, lingering hoppiness and powdery sugar sweetness.   Not bad, but not really a Double IPA in my opinion.

Pailhead (6539) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - AUG 19, 2014
Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate tropical fruits, light lemon, and brett. It pours a transparent amber with a three finger off-white head that has good retention. There is a lot of soapy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate-heavy tropical fruits. The finish has light lemon with a touch of bretty sweet tart flavors and a touch of florals. Its light-medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

Bottle from Bottleworks, Seattle
Hazy light amber color with compact head. Wonderful aroma, pungent hops (but less than usual Nelson Sauvin), perfume and talc, Brett. Lean body; mild malt and toffee flavor, some fruitiness, Bretts, bitter orange peel, strong bitterness, astringent final.
Clearly infected. And it worked out well.

22 oz. bottle, pours a very cloudy orange with a medium beige head and loads of sediment. Aroma is very earthy and yeasty, with bubblegum and rock candy. Doesnt smell like an IPA in any way. Flavour is fucked up, with loads of the Nelson Sauvin hops, maybe a bit of brett, and white wine. Almost tastes infected, but more like a saison. Strange stuff - it tastes very good, just totally off-style. Hard to get my brain away from thinking its an IPA. Its alright.

Cheap bomber from the liquor store. Wasnt expecting too much and what I got was pretty on par. The boozy part will put me down for the night. Love Zappa though Ive yet to have a great beer with his name attached to it. Seems like a Bastard, but just not there. For the price, Im ok with it. Just need to be sure to drink lots of water before bed.

So,basically this tastes like an attempt at an Arrogant Bastard knockoffs pretty well done in that regard, though a bit more noticeable in alcohol. Okay.

8.5% abv 22oz bomber IIPA for under $5? Nice. The bottle pours with a crystal clear copper body that supports a light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up malts, some crystal malts and a bit of caramel to go along with faint cherry like fruity esters mixing with citrus flavored gummy bear hoppiness. The taste begins with some fruity sweetness thats citrus hard candy hoppiness mixed with sweet malts and crystal malt sweetness. To midway a pleasing light degree of earthy tea leaves surfaces along with an upwelling of faint cherry like fruity esters. Into the finish I realize there are moments here and there that have a resiny pine hoppiness. Overall this beer isnt all that cohesive.

Overall a nice solid IPA. Nothing particularly stands out, good or bad. Solid B. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
