Alt-style Schwarzbier
On our grandparents’ farm, our grandmother would brew a grègue of café noir every morning for our grandfather’s pre-dawn breakfast. At the end of each week, after the obligatory Sunday dinner, she would brew numerous pots of it. Each and every one of the adults would then sip demitasses of the strong black coffee, laughing loudly and speaking French even louder.

We wanted to create a beer that paid homage to what café noir meant to our French speaking ancestors. Café noir was more than a cup of coffee – its presence conveyed love and appreciation, and expressed a cheerful welcome.

We use specially roasted German malts and select American hops which provide our LA-31 Bière Noire a small bite of noble bitterness and a dry, French roasted coffee flavor. It goes great with grilled steaks, hamburgers, or sausage po-boys, any spicy blackened Cajun dish, or a dinner table surrounded by those you most cherish.

Ft.Melton (5) - - JAN 8, 2018 does not count
Very dark beer, very dark beer after taste. Very thick. Strong roasted smell and taste. Not bad to sample individually but I wouldn’t buy another 4 pack. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From tap. Pours hazy dark brown to black. Small tan head. Aroma is roasted malty. Breadish. Estery, mild fruity. Roasted dark malty. Slight fruity. Lingering roasted, dark malty finish.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2017 Bottle. Medium brown with a massive bubbly beige head. Belgian yeast esters and thin brown malts. Over-carbonated yeast bomb. Gross.

Bottle from Rouse’s Market. Aroma is roasted malts with coffee and a bit of hop.

bottle @ Calandro’s / Baton Rouge LA --- Nearly opaque black-brown color, deep tan head that stops at 1", waves of lace. Taste is somewhat chalky toasted malt that moves swiftly through light carbonation to a hard-edged roasted hoppy thing, then gradually moves back a little to sweet. The chalk is a distraction.

From a bottle. Nice roasted flavour and aroma, restrained hop profile, smooth and very drinkable.

Pours a deep black from the bottle with thin bubbly tan head that leaves light lace. Aroma of mild roast and a faint hint of Belgian yeast. Taste is pretty much just the roast and a bit of fruity yeast. Almost schwarzbier, but it’s an ale not a lager, meh.

Bottle - damn near black in color, thin beige head, spotty lace. Aroma is dark roast coffee, licorice. Thin mouthfeel, dry, medium carbonation. Taste is an earthy coffee, cocoa powder. Not bad, feels like a chain brewpub porter though.

Cajun (550) - Lafayette, Louisiana, USA - SEP 7, 2016
Bottle - Pours dark brown/black, fizzy beige head. Aroma of dark roasted malt, bakers chocolate, and Coke. First sip is of chocolate muffin, then a weak coffee, dark roasted grain, leading to a very mild hops bitter. Bakers chocolate aftertaste.

appearance: light for the style--clear cola brown, with two fingers of forthy, fizzy medium tan head with a rocky top, which slowly shrinks to a thick cap. aroma: molasses, chocolate, hint of black licorice, roasty coffee with a good dose of vanilla--smells pretty good. taste: taste is much lighter than the aroma; mineral water, watery coffee, ash, cocoa powder. finish: clean and dry, with a lingering minerality. notes: Palate is way too light at zingy for the style; flavor and mouthfeel did not match the aroma, which had created some anticipation. Overall a letdown. Bottle courtesy of George after a trip to Louisiana.
