COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big, bold, and out of control, Annihilator is an American barleywine that will unleash a barrage of flavors on your palate. It begins with a base of British Maris Otter barley for a solid foundation. Smatterings of dark British crystal malts are added for toffee and caramel accents. A three-hour boil helps enrich the deep and complex malt backbone. A heavy dose of Chinook, Columbus, and Cascade hops gives this mighty barleywine a bright and citrusy bitterness. Annihilator is waiting to be challenged by discriminating drinkers.

A fruity start (citrus, apricot, perhaps grape) morphs into a sweet warm feel with hearty malt and finishes with a moderate, woody hop character. Surprising and unique!

Enjoyed on tap as a sampler pour at Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach, CA. Really nice barley wine, appearance a marky caramel amber with almost no head. Aroma rich in syrupy caramel malt and abundant and diverse hops. Taste goes down relatively smooth and straight up potent. Gets better as it warms. Wish I could've had a proper glass, but I would've been annihilated :)

On tap. Great Barley Wine with lots of complexity, and dry enough to make it a pleasure to drink. Hazy (one of their murkier beers) bronze hue with a lasting off-white head with good lace, and some stray alcohol legs. Aromas are hoppy, citrus, pine and spicy. Alcohol, very rich malt with caramel and melanoidin caramelization. Some bready notes. Dark fruit esters, prunes, ripe plums, resins and mild vanilla. Flavors are mildly sweet up front, dark fruits, plums, dates, figs. A mild booze smack. Caramel, alcohol, medium to high bitterness, fruity, citrus hop flavors. Mild resin. Very nice balance with a rich caramelization. Lingering flavors. Creamy carbonation, warming, fuller bodied. Finish is a balance of alcohol (not a harsh alcohol), and bitterness. Very good.

From tap at Brouwers. Pours clear and golden dark amber with a small white head. Aroma is toasted malty and caramelish. Sweet, caramelish, dark malty and light spiced hoppy. Dry and bitter finish.

Tasting flight. Pours an average, clear amber with light tan head. Aroma is mild, at best, but doesn’t attract or detract from the beer. Possibly from the glass. Taste is a hop bomb at first. Loads of clean, new hops with some mild toffee and then some more English malt character midway through. The finish is a more overpowering sweetness and hops. Kind of like a "triple" IPA that is super fresh. From the other reviews I wonder if this batch is extremely fresh. This one was one of the better examples of what I love in a barleywine, aka not to style.

joeneugs (6372) - Livermore, California, USA - APR 8, 2012
On tap in Long Beach. It pours dark amber with a khaki head. The aroma is toasty with hints of cocoa, caramel, raisins and cherry candy. The flavor is thick and chewy with lots of alcohol, raisins, cherries, toast and a bit of spicy hop bitterness in the finish. Nice warmer with huge flavors.

Draft - Lots of sweet and Woody caramel. Clear Amber with a nice beige head. Nice sweetness, tons of hops and a well balanced bitterness. Very nice
