An American stout brewed with rye malt for a silky body, Kilgore is brewed with British roasted barley and chocolate malts for a roasty backbone with notes of coffee and cocoa. Hopped with Chinook, Columbus, Centennial and Cascade hops for a citrusy Pacific Northwest punch

Draft at the brewery. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, fully lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (chocolate, roasted grain, coffee), lightly hoppy (grapefruit), with notes of vanilla, minerals, and berries. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Quite a nice aroma here, not just the usual stout/porter notes...reminds me of British versions (makes me think a bit of Deep Shaft Stout, which I haven't had in ages), albeit much stronger and thicker, almost impy stout like. Clean and elegant, esp. given its size. Sweet, but there's enough bitterness to keep it sippable. Another very solid entry from this place.

September 2017 - Keg at The Rake. As 'Beachwood Kilgore Stout', 7.1%. Opaque black with a foamy brown head that leaves full lacing. Aroma is earthy, dark chocolate. Body is light with tingly carbonation. Taste is earthy, little lime, dark chocolate, twiggy, quite a nice hoppiness. Bordering on a CDA really – fairly hop forward and thin bodied for a stout. Nice though. (6-4-7-3-15=3.5)

Keg at The Rake. It pours cloudy dark - black with a thick tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, umami, vimto, sherbet, cacao, coffee and earth. The taste is dry, chewy malt, earthy, wood, charred earth, leather, brown bread, leather, tannin, coffee grounds and cacao with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A bit chewy. Fair enough stout, but lacks the wow factor for me.

Draft. Aroma of coffee. Flavor is mostly otherwise: chocolate, chocolate cake batter, a faint hint of coffee grounds or overly bitter SBUX espresso, enough to cut the sweetness of cake. Finishes with that quick burst of welcome bitterness. Lots of progression for 7.1%. Tremendous.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a deep cola brown with a medium sized tan head. Roast on the nose, chocolate, cocoa, malt. Medium bodied, roast and cocoa, big malt and a nice hint of hot chocolate sweetness. Roast into the finish, cocoa, chocolate, warm roast, chocolate. A bit of plum and a hint of alcohol. Smooth and quite tasty.

On draught at the Seal Beach brewpub. Brown-black pour with a medium foamy tan head that dissipates steadily to a film. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and hops. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, coffee, fruity hops and a touch of spicy rye. The finish is roasty malt up front with a hoppy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
